I am refurbishing a Ural sidecar rig with a R90/6 BMW motor conversion(with Siebenrock 1000cc cylinders). As I received it, the lead acid battery was originally in the sidecar. I have the stock charging system installed with a new solid state voltage regulator. However, I am trying to locate the battery in the traditional space behind the airbox, under the seat because I am trying t maximize storage space in the sidecar. Standard Airhead/K bike batteries are too large to fit in this space, but I could fit a Lithium Iron Phosphate of the needed Amperage (400+ CCA)
I have done a lot of research on the pros/cons of Lithium battery chemistry and read of a number of horror stories of battery failures, battery fires, etc. Recently I discovered the Antigravity brand of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries which are the first to include an internal Battery Management System which they claim will self protect the battery from overdischarge, or undercharging by automatically disconnecting the battery if things go awry.
The benefit of these are much lighter weight, higher voltage(close to 14V) and supposedly longer life.
So here is my question--does anyone have firsthand experience with these newer LiFePO4 batteries with the internal battery management system? I am hoping to get a few responses to make an informed decision before considering buying. Thanks all! Love this forum.
