BLOUNT CO., Tenn. (WVLT) - A deputy with the Blount Sheriff’s Office shot and killed a bear that was scavenging the body of a crash victim on ‘The Dragon’, according to officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

On Friday, a deputy responded to a motorcycle crash near mile marker 8 on ‘The Dragon’ to help the Tennessee Highway Patrol, according to officials with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy then found a 150 to 175-pound male black bear guarding the body of the male crash victim.

“It was evident the bear had been scavenging the remains of the body,” TWRA officials said.

I did a little internet search and found that the rider had gone missing on Friday. A Facebook group for the Tail of the Dragon had put out about the rider missing.

iPhone crash detection may help-

Yes, an iPhone can detect a motorcycle crash using its Crash Detection feature:
  • How it works
The iPhone's microphone detects loud sounds, which are characteristic of crashes. If the iPhone detects a crash, it will:
    • Automatically call emergency services after a 20-second delay if you're unresponsive
    • Include your device's location in the call
    • Text your emergency contacts
  • How to set it up
To set up Crash Detection, you can:
    • Set up your Medical ID and emergency contacts in the Health app
    • Turn on Location Services for Emergency SOS

However, Crash Detection can't detect all crashes. For example, high-powered motorcycle engines can generate intense vibrations that could affect the iPhone.

You can also use the Detecht app to notify emergency contacts if you're on a motorcycle. The app can also track your ride's progress and position, and pause your ride when you stop.

I have carried a Garmin inReach Mini2 for a number of years set in tracker mode / every 30 minutes so that my wife will know where to send help if I don't return when expected. I ride a lot of USFS service road in SW Idaho and she can go to my inReach map web page and see exactly where I am. The device also is a sat-hotspot so if I don't have cell coverage (which is often) I can send and receive text message on my status and push the SOS function if I am in real trouble. I highly recommend you check one out.

Just a side note, during my Scotland tour in September 2025 a number of the guests were riding German BMW 1300GS and more that one got dropped. The auto crash report function would go off and a german voice would ask if they were all right. I am sure it is a great feature in Germany, but was quite a pain in Scotland.

I’m confused..was it a pain that the bikes got dropped, or was it a pain that the well being of the rider was confirmed?…also, I assume that your tour of Scotland was in 2024.

Just last week, they found a rider on a Harley trike that had gone off one of the non guardrailed area's on my favorite twistie near the house heading up to Tortilla Flats on rte 88 [ also known as the Apache Trail ]. He'd been missing for 3 days when someone finally spotted the motor 150 feet down the cliff. Out here, many of the mountains roads have drop off of hundreds of feet to the canyon floor.

Came in too hot on a hairpin and flipped the trike down into an area not visible from the road. In the past, on this same road, they've found people missing for days that were riding sport bikes and running to fast in the twisties. Go off the road on this one, it's a LONG way down. Most that go over these drop offs don't make it.

It's as dangerous as the dragon but not as long. Only 29 miles but the main twisties are actually about 18 miles. Remote heading into the Superstition Mountains.

It was probably connected to the Bike rental company that was freaking out that you were dropping all their new R1300GS's!:ROFLMAO:

Your are likely right about that. 95% of the guest take out the full insurance package which covers anything that happened to the bike. I have done three different bike tours. And on every one most people drop a bike, even the guides, and it happens 99% in parking lots. In iceland it was because the side stand often sunk into the ground in that course volcanic sand.
