'96 R1100RT Oil

I just got an R1100RT, it currently is running on MOTUL 10-40 synthetic blend. I am looking for an appropriate, high quality oil that is readily available. I am more than 100 miles from a dealer etc. Any thoughts? Is Amsoil OK?

I use Castrol 10w-40 in winter and 20w-50 in summer. 99 cents a quart at Pep Boys after rebate. Try their Purolator L10241 oil filters buy one get one free after rebate. SOMETIMES 1 cent each after rebate (limit 4)

I have a 05 RT and use year round 20-50 Amsoil. I think the Amsoil is great. My bike has no problem starting when the temp. is cold.

Look at the owners manual for your bike.

Find the Oil chart.

Unless it is an F800 or new style K1200, I bet that it says that for any temperatures over 86 degrees you need to be using 20w50 wt. oil.

Dino or synthetic is your choice. BMW says it should be API SG or SH rated - which nowdays pretty much means a motorcycle oil.

I think that of all of the specifications you will find - viscosity is the most important. We use 20w50 wt. oil all year.

Lastly, clean oil is better than dirty oil. Dirty oil is better than no oil. That you can take to the bank.
