AutoCom Failure

After many hours of conversations with them and many hours and dollars of troubleshooting attempts over the past 12 months I've found the folks at Autocom uninterested in my brand new unit not working - but they're quick to deny the warranty. I've been trying to pipe my zumo and escort into my earplugs.......Any ideas on where I can obtain a functional unit from a company that will stand behind their product?

Sorry you have issues...I was able to plug all that into my Active-Plus, but sensory overload made me change the radar to the heads up HARD unit. I have 3 units and have had GPS and radar inputs work on the two that I use all the time

an option is the Baehr...a friend has this on his LT and swears by it..even pricier than Autocomm unfortunately I believe.

Can you be a bit more specific as to the problem you are having?

The U. S. distributor is no longer affiliated with Autocom. There should be a new distributor shortly. The company has come out with a new line of products, which you can see on their website: http://www.autocom.co.uk/

Mr. Autocom himself, Tom Beman, often posts answers to questions over on the BMWST site, under the handle TomB. The PM system on the site would be a good way to send a direct message asking for help. He may even post here.

autocom failure - more info

I'm "using" an Active Plus, purchased 1/08, with a zumo 550 and an escort 9500i; all hard-wired into my bike. My problem is I can't hear the escort (when it's triggered) in my earplug speakers> It works when I run directly from earplug to escort, but not through the Autocom... I tested that lead - it transmits other signals (iPod). Autocom said to use a splitter (#1317 or 1316 - can't remember) but that didn't work either. Steve

My bike is under a mountain of snow and ice at the moment so I can't check specifics, but what you want to do does work if you have the right interface part from Autocom. I've got an 8500 Escort. You need an interface box that provides some isolation between the Autocom and the radar detector.

I've plugged a XM and my V1 into a Mix-it 2. About $190 if I remember and is so easy to mix the sound that I can do it.

Highly recommended by many. Plus you deal with the owner/manufacturer of the company who rides BMW's around the country.

FWIW, I have an autocom *and* a Mix-it on the RTP.

The output of the mix-it feeds the autocom. Advantage is better stereo plus one master volume control for GPS, radar and music.

I also had the AutoCom unit, althought it never failed.. I did find limitations in the technology to fit me needs. I since have swapped out to a StarComm Digital unit and find it flawless.

Not sure if this helps, but there are 4 inputs on your Active plus. Aux 1 and 4 are mono inputs while aux 2 and 3 are stereo inputs. Aux 1 has the priority over the other three inputs and is intended for phone or a blue tooth module ( Get a phone call and it mutes the music). Aux 2 and 3 are intended for stereo sources such as iPod and the other is intended for your Zumo which also has stereo mp3. It makes no difference which of the two stereo devices go into either Aux 2 or Aux 3. Aux 4 is intended for a radar detector and even though it's mono, you hear it out of both speakers. If you were running a Valentine radar detector they make a output module with two outputs. The front of the Valentine module has a 3.5mm output which I assume is intended for earphones in a car. The rear has a mini 2.5mm output and is amplified. The reason I bring this up is if the Escort uses a 2.5mini output, than you would need an Autocom 2.5mm male to 3.5mm male cable which is their #1294. Keep in mind part# 1294 is for a source like the Vanentine which uses a 2.5 mini output.

Any device which is powered by the bike needs an ignition filter which has to go on that line. If for example you just have an iPod running on it's own battery, you can just run a straight cable from your iPod directly to your Autocom with no filter.

Since you say your Escort is "Hard wired", the cable running from your Escort to the Autocom (to Aux 4) will need an isolated filter block which is part 1285. Part 1285 plugs into Aux 4 and leaves you with a female 3.5 mm port at the other end. Your cable running from from your Escort will plug into the open port on the Part 1285.

Lastly, if you are attempting to just use ear buds under your helmet, you need their part 1188 which will connect to the cable output of your Autocom and allow you to plug in your ear buds.

So let's review: Part 1285 plugs into Aux 4 of your Autocom. A cable needs to go from your Escort to the female jack on part 1285. Part# 1188 connects to the output cable of your Autocom which allows you connect to your ear buds.

I gave wrong info

On my prior post I said to use cable Part#1314 when I should have said cable Part #1294. I have since corrected it, but was concerned someone might have written the wrong part number down to order the cable. Cable part# 1314 is a stereo lead intended to run from a Zumo to an isolated block and plug into Aux 2 or Aux 3. My bad.
Sorry.
