Swimming

Greetings
If it is a hot summer and you like swimming here and some local swimming holes, not swimming pool. Swimming quality is dependent apon rainfall around here. None of these place have life guards, in some case swimming is illegal. Remember not to eat a half hour before swimming.

Wear hiking shoe and take a camera, and no swimming

For those with a GS skill set, try riding down to Sullivan Falls (41.20096,-76.20495) the headwaters for Fishing Creek on the Jamison City rd. Those with RTs will need to come up from Jamison City, That way is still 2 miles of dirt. For the young at heart this is about a 40 ft jump into 62 degree water. No one swims they just jump! I never did it, the water is freezing. On a hot summer day this is the coolest spot around, it will be 30 degrees colder than the fairgrounds. Take a chair, a brew, a hoagie or ribs maybe a book and watch the crazies jump into cold ass water. Some days no one is there for hours and it is a very peaceful place.

The Powder Hole is closed and no swimming. Never been there but pain and death has happened there more than twice.

And I hear PA has been very wet this year. I have a Sis in Harrisburg. Should be a very pretty year in the PA Wilderness areas. 65 is warm by my standards in the West, for water swimming/surfing. The Ocean is never above 55 out here(NCal) and the mountain waters are much colder at 40. We have to wear wetsuits. Randy

World's End State Park also has a nice cool swimming hole in the Loyalsock Creek, not to mention the killer view from the World's End overlook and the covered bridge at nearby Forksville. All are worth the ride!

I think, maybe that would be the Haystacks on the Loyalsock Creek.

The pave road is still close due to a washout. The only way to get there is dirt road. Which is good for those GSs

Our spring was very wet but now we are in a nice summer weather pattern, low to mid 80's during the day and low 60's during the night. The rain has mostly been a slight chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

Not quite. Right along Route 154 is the park entrance and swimmimg area.

The closest swimming hole fishing hole, and Covered bride is at the southern end of the fairgrounds, About a 1/2 mile long ending at the Rupert covered bridge. Deep pools fast water with lots of structure. The fishermen told me they catch bass, sunfish, catfish sometime a trout even a walleye once in awhile. The biggest problem, it is also a great swimming hole and the local kids use it alot. Very picturesque

That old bridge in the foreground is a very old "eyebar truss." Note the eyebars forming the lower chords and some of the diagonals.

When those eyebars fail, the bridge falls down, which helps explain why that bridge is closed.

If such things are of interest to you and you're attending the Rally, take a trip to the Lehigh Valley (Jim Thorpe) and Allentown/Bethlehem areas. You might be able to find a few old spans from the pre-Pittsburgh era of steel making.
