How Was Your Summer?

BC1100S

Left Coast Rider
With the month of September usually comes a reduction in the amount of travelling/holidays most of us do/take. My assignment for you, class, is a quick note covering "What I Did On My Summer Vacation".

I'll start:

- Went to the BMW Rally in Salem. Met a couple of guys (SeabeckS and K75S) from this site. Attended a bunch of seminars. Had a gas.
- Rode south from there into Northern California, out to the coast, and then down to Napa Valley area. Outstanding.
- Went to the BeeCee Beemer Rally in Nakusp, BC. Met Voni and Paul Glaves. Camped for first time in about 100 years. Had a gas.
- Rode from Minneapolis through S. Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California. Had a real gas.
- No accidents, breakdowns, flat tires, etc.

How about you?

So far,
Cliff notes here,
Got to lots of riding with family this year!
Son got his MC license this spring,
Rode to Moonshine for burger with 2000 closest friends from all over country
Entire family rode to 40th Sturgis mini-rally in Michigan, going every year from now on.
wife and I took weekend ride to PUT-IN-Bay and lake Erie area.
Couldn't go to National Rally this year so we took week and went south,
KY,TN,NC,WV,VA,OH and some great roads with names like Dragon, Moonshiners 28, Back of Dragon, etc.
after getting dumped on In VA by rain and 100 degree days rest of trip I decided I would rather have hotel and AC and showers than camping.
so far we have covered 9 states this year. Not the most in year but not bad.
I think for me riding season is just getting started, fall colors and cooler temps make just going out for a few hundred mile more enjoyable.

Left 5 July for the Rally in Salem, OR. Traveled thru Tuscaloosa, Al en route to Memphis, TN to visit friends and relatives. Headed west and then north to Hot Springs, SD. Spent 2 days visiting Custer/Needles, Sturgis, Rushmore, and Crazy horse. Few things will get your attention like having a Buffalo ambling by your bike so close I could have reached out and touched him. I then went over the Big Horn Mtns on Rt 14 to Shell, WY and then Greybull, WY. On to Cody, WY and the Buffalo Bill Museum and then Yellowstone. I arrived just 10 minutes before Old Faithful did her thing and then enjoyed buffalo meatloaf at the cafeteria. Leaving Yellowstone I traveled Rt 20 to Mountain Home and I-84 west along the beautiful Columbia River. Arrived at the Salem, OR fairgrounds on Tuesday and proceeded to enjoy the Rally along with visiting The Evergreen Aviation Museum and The Tillamook Aviation Museum. Leaving Salem on Sunday I decided to take the northern route back east via Glacier National Park. There were 18 miles of road repair but the Road to the Sun ride was fantastic. I took Rt 2 across Montana to N Dakota to I-29 and south to Sioux City and then Kansas City. I crossed Missouri dropping down thru Sedalia and further south to I-55 to Memphis, TN for 2 days of rest. Back to Tuscaloosa and then home to Jacksonville, FL. July 5 to July 31 many great memories and last but not least only 1 full day of rain the whole trip.

Summer? I live in AZ, we're just getting to our best rinding weather now :)

:thumb

I don't think I've been on the bike since early June. It's just too hot for me to ride in the summer plus it's when we do most of our RV'ing, mostly to escape the summer temps. Anyway, I just started getting the bike ready for fall/winter riding. I'm hoping to make up for the summer non-riding.

+1 but riding. My bike with its new CF body gets matt-film coated Saturday and later when we're not 104, I'll ride it plenty.

Ok, you win. :laugh

I moved....

That's pretty much it. Didn't really ride anywhere except an ADV weekend in WV and the Finger Lakes Rally. Made the best of both trips.

But as for the summer....I moved....and all the headaches and hassles that came along with it.

Recovered.

Rode thru ID and WA and north on the Cassiar Hwy to Skagway to meet friends. On to Dawson City, YT for Dust 2 Dawson and many more friends. Back to MT via Jasper Park.

Camping at Seeley Lake.

Beartooth Rendezvous at Red Lodge; rode the Pass.

Duluth, MN to visit friends and attend Aerostich's Very Boring Rally.

Bought a new bike..... FJR1300

Riding into ID this weekend for an annual retreat.

May head to UT later this month and have a couple of club rides in Oct.

Too hot to ride, so I had the bike done in almost all CF (except tank panels) and removed 15 or so pounds of weight. Now, wheels and body match.

No Summer fun for my rs

I'm not sure when summer starts or ends here; it's mostly warm. Winter was from Jan. to March and only got down to about 50 degrees F. Since then it's been anywhere from about 70 to 90 degrees F.

I've ridden about 15,000 km on a 15 year old, 125cc Kymco scooter and about 5000km on a 1150gs. I ride the gs on Thursdays with a wild group of Taiwanese bikers; they ride the mountain roads like it's a closed racetrack; I usually bring up the rear and get lost often. The scooter is my everyday ride for fun and errands.

My '78 rs is sitting in my dry but ventilated shed, with dry bowls and a full tank of treated fuel waiting for my return next summer. I disconnected the battery and put it on a tender; I hope that works.

Well...

My summer began in mid May...

A friend from England, along with his daughter, came across the "pond" and we rode a couple of my K bikes down to North Carolina to do a British ride in foul weather with about 50 friends. Had an awesome time of it all, riding thru WV down, and back up thru VA. Trucked my Norton Commando down in a buddy's truck, and left it down there for some work. Been day trippin' about South Central PA on it all summer. Now running like a bandit! :clap

In Late June I was invited to go over to Europe, so on July 26th I flew to Hamburg Germany. We loaded two bikes into my buddy's truck, and went up thru Denmark and Sweden, ultimately arriving at Valldall, in Southern Norway, to attend the 50th Annual BSA International Rally. Along the way, we visited with friends, & camped for a weekend at a major Swedish Hot Rod rally- probably 10000 people there, with most all the cars and bikes being ridden or driven in. 18 days of bliss, and amazing travel, with lots of really cool motorhead stuff along the way. Not to mention the scenery.

SO, aside from the regular, "hum-drum" ( :D ) everyday riding all summer long...

the motorcycling highlights from my summer include:

The Back Of The Dragon (VA route 16)
The Snake (US 421, Shady Valley, TN)
BRP & Skyline Drive (various sections of the BRP in NC, SD in VA)
Gothenburg to Udevalla (Sweden)
50Th Annual BSA International Rally (hosted by Norwegian BSAOC Vall Dall, NO)
Trollstigen (World Famous Troll Path- Route 63 Norway)
Geirangerfjord/Dalsnibba (Norway)

I dunno... in print it doesn't read like much. Guess I gotta get out more. :brow

Been riding all summer commuting to work. When it gets over 110, it's real uncomfortable. 119 is on fire.

I doubt I've put a single mile on a motorcycle this summer, and maybe only 100 this spring.

It's because I've recently moved to Oklahoma. Not only are the roads flat and straight as far as the eye can see (before the earth starts to curve away), but they're pot-holed, rough, and beat to hell. If the thought of riding for hours just to find something good doesn't bum me out, it's the thought of riding for hours on those roads just to get back home after a good ride. Haha.

When I whine like that to other riders, I almost always have the same conversation:
"No, there are plenty of good places to ride in Oklahoma!"
"Where?"
"Arkansas."

So, in other words, I hope to move soon.

Good weather for riding this summer in Minnesota. Of course, with the snows in May, my personal season didn't get started all that early, but once it did, I've been riding almost daily. That said, I really haven't ridden to any destination other than my place of work. As usual, most of miles are put on commuting and this year is no exception. Usually, though, I do get to a rally or maybe a weekend trip. Not so this year, but then the riding season is far from over.

After a 3-day slab ride from Atlanta to Salem, and a week of GS Giant setup and kitten herding, I took a very nice set of less-advertised adventure rides back home:
