'03 K1200RS Intermittent Cruise Control

VIEJO

Member
Returning from my club's Saturday breakfast run last week the cruise control on my '03 K1200RS (39K) went intermittent needing to be reset several times. The road was smooth and level and no gusty winds; this has also happened one or two times before in the last several months. I used to think the cruise control was just to keep me out of traffic court but over the last year or so it has become more of a welcome relief for my increasingly arthritic right hand. Before I tear into the beast does anyone have any experience here and any guidance on where to begin.... or not to. The cruise control unit is expensive (but occasionally available used) so I'm hoping the problem is in the switch, but, as I said- I'm flying blind here.

Thanks,

Viejo

Great thread!.... if that doesn't do it I'm going back to my Schwinn.

Mil Gracias

Having to replace the cruise control unit is rare. Most of the time it can be fixed with an adjustment or a new micro switch.

I had the same problem on my '03 GT. Any short, bad bulb or poor connection in the rear brake circuit will cause this symptom. Fixed a bad connection and the CC works fine.

Cruise control unit was good..... turned out the outer casing on the throttle cable was fraying at the grip causing the throttle cable to occasionally hang up on the grip assembly and lose the required free play.
