Cracked fairing bracket

Hello all,

'93 K1100LT

While reassembling the bike yesterday, I noticed the main fairing support bracket, pn # 46 63 2 308 715, has cracked. The crack is located at the top of the bracket where it bolts to the frame. I intend to remove the bracket, weld it and reinstall it. My question is, what causes these to crack? Is there a way to prevent future cracking?

Time and vibration coupled with the weight of the fairing will cause cracks like you have. Also if the bike was dropped. When you are welding it up, you could try some gussets. One thing if you strengthen one area it usually moves the stresses to another spot. The bike is old enough to have earned the crack.

I had a sub frame on my R 1100RS crack, right at a T section. Disassembled the fairing, and my local welder fixedit. I had him add some buttresses at the T intersect. Has held up OK for the last 30,000 miles.

+1 on this.

Thanks for the replies.

I removed the bracket, welded, painted and reinstalled it. I installed the fairing and lowers today making sure all the mounts lined up with the mating screw holes in the fairing and lowers. The only thing left is to reinstall the engine protection bars and wait for the ice and snow to melt and warmer temperatures.
