America’s Cup 2021

To put it into perspective my buddy has a 35' Everglades with a pair of big a$$ outboards.

We go from Newport to Block Island in about a half hour (21 miles) dock to dock with a top speed of 50. Patriot would have passed us.

The current record for speed under sail is 65 knots in a trench with consistent wind. The 50kt barrier was broken only 11 years ago by a kiteboard. The fact that the AC boats in the 50's is amazing.

While that's pretty cool what I am really interested in are the tenders and support boats that are designed to keep up.

Prada Cup Final to determine whether Great Britan or Italy will face New Zealand in the Americas Cup starts Friday the 12th (US). Best of 13 (first to 7). Coverage on NBCSports. USA was eliminated in the semi -finals. Should be 2 races per day with a lay day or two.

Team UK had an American Magic moment at start of race four. Not as catastrophic luckily. When you realize how big these boats are it’s heart stopping

I know nothing about sail racing, however, when watching, regardless of which way the wind’s blowing, why doesn’t a boat just crank their sail to catch the wind from wherever, crank the rudder to keep going straight for the finish while the other boat tacks and jibes?

Easiest answer... speed

Luckily I had set DVR to catch all and the power was on to record at right time. Caught up a few nights back.

That series was proof of how fortunes come and go quickly. How dominance one week guarantees nothing. The fastest boat early on almost sank, the engineering designs maybe not realized on another.
That Ferrari of a boat was impressive but time will tell in a few weeks

Worth checking out even if you don't think you like watching sailing. These things are rocketships! 75 footers doing over 50mph if the wind is near 20mph.:bolt Each race takes 20-30 minutes.

51.1 knots (58.8mph) in 15.1 knots of wind bearing off at the top mark!!!!:eek

Next two races Thursday.

Just need to remember to get the leeward foil down in time!

Walking: place right foot on ground before lifting left foot. Not doing so: falling.
