Then- As a child, my brother travels in a wicker close-basket with a blanket.

Now- Child must be in a $200.00 safety seat installed by local police.....or the child is going to die.

Debbie was the youngest of eight.
She said her spot was standing on the hump in the back and hanging onto the rope across the back of the front seat.

I worked out of city hall in a city of ~80K. Sidewalks were a 'negotiated' piece of infra-structure. Upscale divisions always had sidewalks, both sides. Developers building more modest divisions would usually prevail with the argument that they (sidewalks) were too expensive for this "affordable" tract. Sometimes one side of walks, sometimes none.

Then: people walked places, there were places to walk TO
Now: why walk, residential-only zoning and big-box-itis means neighborhood stores have gone the way of the dinosaur

Then- Dead end street. The feared part of the climb where you could go no further. Kids were teased for living on a dead end street.

Now- CUL De Sac. The epitome of a great spot to live.

Alleys are another thing that’s gone the way of the dinosaur. Now we put our garbage cans out front in the street on garbage day. And as you drive through a subdivision you can almost tell it’s age by the alley and garage combos; alleys w/garage in back yard, alleys with single stall attached garage facing street, no alleys and attached single stall, no alleys and attached double stall, no alleys and attached triple stall.

Now- Standard transmission- “of course it has a transmission, it’s standard on all vehicles”.

Then: For 26 cents a gallon ya got an attendant with his name on his shirt and station branded cap on his head, who put the ethyl in, checked the oil, vacuumed the interior, cleaned the windshield, checked the tires' air pressure, asked you if you were having a good day and handed out free maps.

Now: We have $2.00 to $5.00 a gallon gas, no attendant, no services, no maps and corn squeezing's in the gas.
