A 1968 /2 should have the necessary seals for gear oil. I'd use an 80w90 gear oil. The question becomes whether to use GL4 or GL5. It has been suggested that GL5 gear oils can contain high sulfur which might damage yellow metals. Vech recommends GL4. I don't subscribe to that and use GL5 in my /2.

i go with Vech on this one.......For an old brass gear transmission on a wheel horse, I had to find some gear oil that specified that it was safe. on the bottle it advised "Safe for Yellow Metals Gears" .....GL4........
is the 90w best or before the change, the 40w motor oil that was used
I would find a gear oil that is 80w90 rather than a straight weight.
Here is Vech's discussion of the use of GL4:

But I come at it from a standpoint of how many /2 bikes are stranded on the side of the road due to this problem. Can't say as I've heard it is a problem. But go with what makes sense for you.
