Floor boards or fairing pockets?

As I understand it, the K1600B or Grand America can come equipped with the forward foot boards or the small fairing storage pockets but not both? Can anyone explain this? I can see no reason foot rests would result in a delete of something on the upper fairing. I'm looking at used K1600b models, and don't care for the angle or placement of the forward foot rests. I would much rather have a bit of storage in the fairing for a phone, sunglasses, etc. Unfortunately, the majority of K1600b models come with the foot boards.

I believe the issue is the storage bins get in the way of the legs, making it difficult to reach the platforms with the feet. I have a GTL, and the storage bins seem like a nice idea. However, the right insulated bin with the USB and audio connector is far too small for most cell phones that have been produced in the last decade. And I would be reluctant to put electronics in either bin when the bike is running, as they get quite hot inside due to them flanking the engine. They do seem to shelter the legs a bit though.

Never thought about the heat. That would be bad for a cell phone. Most shut down just sitting in a tank bag map pocket exposed to direct sunlight. Still, I think the little pouch in the right bag of the K1600b is a ridiculous location.

Well, I got a K1600b with the fairing pockets. Had no idea how tiny the compartments were. Then on the B model, BMW doesn't run a USB cord to the right hand pocket like they do on the GT, so putting a phone there is out in any event. Pretty worthless, really. Wish I'd shopped around now for a bike with the footboards. Oh well, live and learn.
