Final Drive Fluid, fill by measured volume or fill to level hole?

My manual specifies 80-90 Gear oil. It's thick but by no means a grease.

And it's not as thick as you think ... the lubricants industry purposely uses inflated viscosity numbers for gear oil to discourage folks from putting it in their engine. They added some bad smell, too.

There is indeed some old American tradition to call this stuff grease.

This thread reminded me of an old BMW rider I met in Detroit when I started riding BMWs in the early seventies. Fill to the bottom of the threads... The same was true of the /5, 6 and 7 transmissions. This guy would lay his bike over on it's side to get more oil into the trans. He figured if a little's good, a lot's better. Just glad I didn't take up his school of thought. I agree with using the prescribed, measured amounts. Never had a failure as a result.
I would be afraid of putting too much oil in the trans. Too much pressure on the seals and perhaps getting oil on the clutch, certainly they do warn you against filling with too much engine oil to avoid a seal rupture . that will do the same thing to the clutch plate

Of course this thread is about the rear drive, not the transmission.

Oops.,. But same applies....drain then add measured recommended amount....seals are in danger...rear drive seal broken will flood rear brake with oil until replaced... But I could be wrong...so carry on
