Transmission and final drive fluid color question

I changed fluids. 2001 R1100R 3100 miles.
The final drive fluid was a lot darker than the transmission fluid.
Both magnets 🧲 had the metal Fussy stuff but no chunks.
Is this color difference normal ?

Does your bike have 3100 miles on the odometer or was it 3100 miles since previous FD gear oil change? How long was the fluid in there?

A little darker, I wouldn't worry as long as the drain plug magnet only has a paste residue.

3100 Miles total. As far as i Can see on records it had the 600 mile service in 2003. So 17 years.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. The final drive is vented, up on top. You have a little more than 200 ml of gear oil in there. Just ride the bike a few times, a few hundred miles, and then dump the final drive oil again. It will probably look like new. Used gear oil will get a little darker. If it comes out looking like coffee with cream, you had water mix in.

I suspect the oil in the final drive is not the same as the oil in the transmission. The FD oil may well have been changed at the 600 mile service while the transmission oil wasn't.

You are probably correct.
The spec for trans and final drive is the same though.
So that’s what I put in. The same 80W90 GL-5
All is smooth after fluid change.
The residue was same on both magnets 🧲
Changing the oil today 20W50 synthetic
