R1100 Broken Transmission / Subframe Mount :(

Not sure exactly when this happened; I just got back from a 1000 mile trip on the scrambler which included a bit of hardpack/gravel road riding with lots of chuckholes, and since I was camping I had probably an extra 60-80 lbs of gear on the back. I got back on Sunday and just noticed today that the mounting boss on the right side of the transmission where the rear subframe mounts is broken off. Super bummed. My question is: Is this just a fluky random thing or is this kind of a known failure point that I need to address if I'm going to continue to use the bike off road. I don't have the chunk that broke off but I think I could weld it up and re-drill and tap it. I will keep an eye out for a used trans but I'm concerned if this is a stress point that it's just going to happen again. Just wondering if anyone has run into this before.

Thanks!

Oh yes, this was a known thing back in the day. Touratech made "hard parts" kits to reinforce areas like that. I haven't seen a broken case in a while but I've seen plenty.

I have quite a few cases if you want to just replace the one you have.

Figured I couldn't have been the first... I was planning to pull the tranny to do a spline lube and clutch replacement over the winter anyway so I may take you up on that. Is there any info still available on the kits that were used? I'd be curious as to what they did; doubt anything's still available 20 years later.

Did a little research and couldn't find the Touratech kits - they don't seem to stock them anymore, but I did find another company (DS Bike Protection) that has something similar (I think):

Looks like a used trans in working order runs about $350-$500, so that's probably the route I'll go. If I got a case I would have to swap out the internals which I assume would involve some special tools to get the gears set up that I'm not going to have.
