Ethanol

Then we'll also have to talk about feeding that food to an animal also seems dumb, since the conversion rate is so poor (1lb of beef for 6 to 20lbs of corn?)

Actually, there's a very strong case for replacing Corn with Barley as an animal feed stock. A bit lower in energy, but higher in protein, Barley requires less water and nitrogen (urea) as a crop.
 
New R18 Can Handle 15% Ethanol Gasoline

The manual for the R18 shows that it can handle 15% Ethanol. Here's a PNG from page 68 of the manual:

I would say, Iowa can produce all the ethanol they can muster... just ship it out for non domestic use, if anyone would buy it.
