Maintenance Free Battery for 2003 F650GS Dakar

I'm having trouble getting my brand new lead acid battery to register over 11.4 volts after charging it on my Optimate 4 charger. Sitting on my workbench for a day or two without being connected to my charger results in the reading dropping to about 8.7. When I install it in the bike, the lights work, but absolutely nothing happens when I hit the start button. I'm thinking the battery should read something like 13 volts. So I'm about ready to give up and look for a maintenance free battery for my bike if there is such a thing. Thanks for any help/advice.

I went to a Deltran lithium battery in my 2013 G650GS and never had a problem. Got one of their chargers that can be switched from lead acid to lithium charging. Also picked up one for my 310. They are amazingly lite.

    Welcome to the forum

Was it a battery you added acid to after purchase, or was it off the shelf? Sounds like it may be bad to me if you are sure your charger is working.

We use a AGM maintenance free but you add the initial acid on our 650. Just checking acid level on that bike was a PITA.

Yep - battery broken somehow... a "good" resting battery voltage should be ~12.7 volts or more.

I've had good luck with Motobatt batteries (Tom Cutter at Rubber Chicken Racing, among others, sells them) - sealed, and double the posts for more farkles
Looks like your bike would take a MB12U (but double check)
