I'd first check the rear wheel sensor.
It's an easy test: use the turn signal auto-cancel. That feature uses distance as one of its inputs, and that signal gets sent by the rear wheel sensor. So if your signals don't self-cancel, it's likely the rear wheel sensor.....which also sends the signal for the odometer.

He did not mention anything about the speedometer also not working. If the problem was the sensor or the wiring, the speedometer would also not function.
Chances are 99 out of 100 that if the speedometer is working but the odometers are not, the odometer gears are bad.
