Trouble pairing Sena 10OU to Sena SMH5-UNIV

I’ve used my Sena 10OU integrated into my Schuberth E1 for a couple of years for GPS directions only. Been very happy with it. Recently my niece has started riding with me - the most perfectly neutral pillion I’ve ever had - and for her birthday this month I bought the SMH5 for her helmet so we can talk while riding. I was hoping to surprise her with the paired unit...but they won’t pair!

I followed the directions and get both into pairing mode. The lights flash, the helmets both beep every few seconds in search mode, and each announces “intercom pairing.” But a minute goes by and they both drop into standby mode

Is there a trick to this?

Pete
