Extra tools to carry on G 310GS

...
Many roadside assistance plans have a mileage limitation for a tow. 35 miles and 100 miles are the most typical. That may work for a Ford in Dallas but it may not work so well for a BMW motorcycle in west Texas, or most places west of the Mississippi for that matter. Allstate RV provides no-cost towing to "the nearest qualified service facility." If I need a tire that might be an all brands motorcycle shop. But if it is a BMW specific failures - HES, stator, switch gear, etc - it will be a tow to the nearest BMW dealership even if that is 400 or 500 miles away. Where I live a 35 mile tow won't get me to a grocery store, let alone a qualified repair facility. As with most things, the fine print matters.

Progressive also offers a roadside assistance option with unlimited mileage towing to the nearest "qualified repair facility". I've not needed to test it, but for $15 a year, with trip interruption coverage for meals, alternate transportation and lodging, it's a pretty decent deal. It may not be available to residents of some states.

And yes to Jenny Morgan's RR on her big long test ride around the country on her 310 GS. It's a really good RR where she does her best to push the bike to all of its limitations and writes it all down for you to check out. She's a very nice person who has a lot a lot of offroad experience and her threads tend to be a lot of fun. I threw some $$ to her when she went to the Dakar and have been following her for years.

Sorry I didn't think to throw up her thread before ebell did, I must have been drunk.:ha

I agree about Jenny, we shared a camp spot with her a couple of years ago at the Horizons Unlimited meeting in Nakusp. It was a pleasure to meet her. She had the Rally Raid GS 310 with her for her presentations.

At risk of sounding negative, can we get this thread back on to the OP’s topic about tools and not roadside assistance? I’m always looking for new-to-me ideas regarding road/trail-side repair.

A few lightweight tools to consider

I have these.

Metric toolkit, add some sockets of your own that fit your bike

Supplement the toolkit with a Torx set for Teutonic flavor.

T-handle wth sockets, add a few of your own sockets, also complements the small toolkit.

I prefer JIS bits, and use this T-handle, adding a few bits.
It’s is a bit heavier than the alloy T handle, but I like it.

I’ve also had a lot of mileage out of Titan Tools’ stubby ratchets, sometimes used with extensions

And stubby wrenches save space, but full size ones are needed for wheel removal.

YMMV

Hey guys,
Just a note. I realized that my G 310GS tool kit did not include a sparkplug socket ???? Why not ??
After seeing the work involved on a video about changing the sparkplug I'm thinking that BMW Motorrad is thinking that most owners don't want to mess with this.
Paul,Voni,…... did either of you discover the lack of a sparkplug socket missing on your 310's tool pouch as odd ??

No. I have the Repair CD. While it is possible to dismantle the bike sufficiently in a motel parking lot to reach the spark plugs that is not anything most riders would ever do. Certainly a spark plug socket is needed in the workshop. But I don't see a need to carry one with me.
