IMHO, the vertical lights you reference are your Daylight turn signals, as well as your Nighttime Cornering Lites (just lean over a bit and see how they light up the corners). That's how they appear to me on my '14 GT. My 'used bike' came additional w/white fog lites that I run with always turned on (as well as amber Skeen running lites).
Just experiment a bit apres sunset...

Here's a link to what I think is a BMW Rider's Manual for your bike.

Looking through the manual, it makes reference to "Ground Lighting." I don't think I'd heard of that concept before. I had heard that the two rows of LEDS on that model were for lighting in corners.
