Garmin Map Update - 2/20/2020

Alan and Lee - So you'll know the history, I DL/d the Garmin Express Update on my 2015 MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago when it told me it was available. I found the Map Update on the morning of 2/20 and DL/d that update on the same Mac. I do have a BMW Navigator V purchased in mid-June 2015. My original post included a screenshot of the page in Garmin Express. I can't explain the difference.

If this makes any difference, my DL speed is close to 300MB/s at that hour of the morning. However, I can't see how that would affect anything.

Perhaps its early purchase date meant that later NavV models came with more RAM storage for map files? I dunno...

I just updated my Nuvi and noticed it does not have a DEM map.
That would explain a big difference between the Nuvi and Nav V.

DEM is Digital Elevation Model.
That's the map layer that gives you a 3D view.

John, I don't think there was any RAM difference in versions of the Nav-V. I'm thinking it is something else, but don't know what.

I'm thinking that my speculation regarding whether one is using a PC or a Mac would have something to do with file size is wrong as well because the file has nothing to do with the computer system and is just the Garmin GPS files for the map update. So, like you, I'm at a loss to explain it.

I just updated my Nuvi and noticed it does not have a DEM map.

That's the map layer that gives you a 3D view.
Also, different GPS units have features like FourSquare, etc.

My understandinding is that the three maps we see on the Nav-V and Nav-VI (mine read):
  • Cnna - Na - Dem North America Dem
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 Basic 3D
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 ALL
North America Dem, is what holds the 3d terrain (as you identified)
Basic 3D is the 3d buildings that are shown in some cities
ALL is the road map
The All refers to it being all of North America, as opposed to some GPS units that come with only US & Canada (no Mexico). Whichever one uses each has some of the Carribean Islands such as Grand Caymen, Jamacia, Puerto Rico, etc.

Each of my four GPS units has a slightly different combination of Maps loaded:

Nav-VI
  • Cnna - Na - Dem North America Dem
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 Basic 3D
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 ALL
DriveAssit50
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 Foursquare
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 ALL
Nuvi58
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 Foursquare
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 US & Canada
Nuvi56
  • CN North America NT 2021.10 US & Canada

BTW, for the Nav-V and Nav-VI one can have access to Foursquare and it's features by linking your smartphone with the Garmin Smartphone Link App to your Nav-VI.
