Inherited 2002 K1200LT, Starter?

Ok guys and gals, I just inherited a 2002 K1200LT with 19000 miles and it has been sitting in a garage for it's whole life. It hasn't been cranked in two years and the starter wants to run all the time.....I pumped out all the old gas and put in fresh. I'm going to the handle bar switch first, any other ideas??? TIA
 
Make sure you have a fully charge battery, but it sounds like you starter relay is stuck. A low battery somethings will make the relay stick or its is a bad relay. First thing I would do is get a Clymers manual and study the starter circuit.
 
Stuck starter relay almost certainly. If a person tries to crank that specific model (and other classic K bikes) with a weak battery the relay sticks shut. The relay is in the right rear corner of the relay box under the black plastic lid under the rear of the fuel tank. It is the one with the large wires visible and attached on posts. It is an easy fix.

The next issue is whether the fuel pump will run or stall. And if it does then the next issue is whether the fuel injectors will squirt or be gummed up. Other than that it will most likely be smooth sailing.
 
Yeppers, pulled the relay and cleaned it up and burnished it......runs like a new one!!!! I asked my uncle and he said he tried to start it and the starter war running full time so he didn't mess with it. Works now.....
 
Bikes that sit for a long time can develop brake issues, largely from moisture in the air being drawn into the hydroscopic brake fluid. That vintage bike has the boosted brake system, aka “whizzy” brakes, and proper service on those is critical. Brake fluid needs to be completely flushed every other year at a minimum, once per year in damp environments, and it is a complicated and difficult procedure. It’s worth the $$ to have a dealer do it and get it right, lest you have issues with the brakes and/or ABS system. And, your bike sounds like a great catch and worth the investment!

Be sure to replace all the rubber brake lines with stainless if this has not been done already. If OEM they are far beyond their use by date! Old ones can fail quite suddenly.
