radar detectors

I have read that with many new cars having radar systems on them that it has made radar detectors almost useless because of all the false alarms. Does anyone have direct experience with this. If so are there any that are less susceptible to this. Does anyone have any feedback on which ones are best for bike use.

I have a Valentine One. An advantage to owning a V1 is that it can be sent back to the manufacturer and updated as desired. I had an update applied about two years ago and it virtually eliminated false alerts from the now ubiquitous mini-radar systems on cars.

Where I live one can ride an entire day and not have an encounter with a LEO running radar. My experience with riding east of the Mississippi is that in many areas radar alerts are so common as to make using a detector redundant.

Valentine One has been “temporarily out of stock” for about 10 months now. I have an old V1 that I can’t upgrade because they’re not offering the service until they resume production. Lots of speculation out there as to whether the “new” V1 will be a major update or a minor tweak.

I also have a Uniden R7. It’s got lots of range and arrows like the V1. It does get triggered by the BSMs (Blind Spit Monitoring) from some cars, but it doesn’t make it worthless by any stretch.

The Radenso Theia is coming out hopefully later this year and will be using game-changing technology to fully eliminate falses from BSMs. It should even be able to identify the radar gun you’re being hit with. I’m sure it will be pricy (I’m guessing north of $700), but will definitely be getting one when they’re available.

TONS of good info on rdforum.org.

Adaptiv Technologies TPX 2.0 Motorcycle Radar/Laser Detector has worked fine for me since 2014.

I like it because it is Weatherproof, I don't see a lot of False Alarms but I live in Flatistan.

All that said it is six years old and there is now a newer modelAdaptiv Technologies TPX 3.0 Motorcycle Radar/Laser Detector P-01-01 which sells for $399.

No performance awards for me yet, Knock-on-Wood!

UPDATE: I received the following from Adaptive today

Hi John,

Thank you for being a customer.

Unfortunately, 2.0 is not upgradeable to 3.0.

If you want to utilize the existing 2.0 harness on your bike, you'll need to get an adapter cable:

https://adaptivtech.com/products/tpx-pro-to-version-2-harness-adapter-cable-br-p-05-04

We can honor the $100 rebate if you only want to get "detector only". If so, just let us know and we'll email you an online payable invoice.
Thank you,
Adaptiv Technologies

I've been tossing up the idea of getting one. In Canada they are illegal in every province but I'm not adverse to that. I'd want something I could bounce from bike to bike.

Not illegal in Alberta and BC. Read it on the internet so it must be true. Annie and I both have radar detectors and have crossed into those provinces several times with them mounted.

That has been my experience

All of my older detectors suffer from this. My new Escort [paired with my smart phone] in the truck is foolproof though. It "learns" where false alarms are and eliminates them. The constant updating via the phone keeps everything current. My Adaptiv on the motorcycle is good when traffic is sparse; but the new avoidance systems on cars keep it alerting in an urban environment.

I just turned K band off on my V1. One of these days I'll get it updated.

Most LEO's use Ka-band today, even some highway speed signs have shifted to Ka, but out in the hinterlands, I find a fair number of County and City LEOs still using old K-band equipment. I usually run with X-band shut off but the K-band still saves me money.

The best Radar Detector in the world won't save you unless you also maintain "Situational Awareness" you've got to think like an LEO to avoid a ticket.

Clearly the only way to fool them...

Generally KA band is used by highway patrol folks. Everyone should leave KA band active, as only law enforcement use KA band. There are no KA band blind spot monitors on cars, and any KA activation is from a copper.

The older K band is where the false alerts from blind spot monitors come from. In California, where I live, local PD and Sheriffs will use K band, but that is mostly in towns and cities. Lots of folks turn off K band, but it is a value judgement. In my area, sheriffs don't do highway speed enforcement with radar/lidar, unless they are on a motorcycle.

Lots of places use lidar, but unless you have a legal laser jammer (depends on what state...) the detector alone doesn't matter. The officer will have you speed before you even know you've been lidared.

I keep KA and K notifications active on my Uniden R3, but false k band activations are frustrating. A Marc Parnes visual indicator helps, as I can't hear the audible alerts on the freeway.

A second vote for rdforum. There is lots of good information there.

That is ominous about Valentine One's stocking/production problems. I hope they are able to get going again. I've been using a V1 since 2002 and it's paid for itself many times over. I don't leave home without it!

A radar detector is only a tool, and the V1 has been the best such tool I've found, but you still need to use you head, and sometimes your gut feel. :) However, used intelligently, I'm a big believer. When I got the V1 upgrade it required a new unit since the processor in my older model wasn't fully re-programmable. The new one has been - like in your case - about immune to BSM falsing. I have an older Escort Passport and two BEL's and they are a mess in traffic. Fortunately for me, I live where there is a lot of open roads good for "brisk" riding, where long range detection is most important and BSM interference not so much so.

Out of curiosity, I called Valentine One today and they said they have been waiting for special parts for a very long time, but are now in the testing stages of new production and expect to have product available within 30 days or less.

There’s been a running joke on rdforum.org about “2 weeks”. For many months, callers to Valentine One were told they expected to resume production in about 2 weeks. I finally gave up and bought a Uniden R7. I doubt I’ll upgrade my V1 and will instead wait for the Radenso Theia.

Radar

I don’t have a detector, once I pull off my helmet and the cop sees an old guy (64) the don’t even give me a warning. Got pulled over doing 64 in a 45 yesterday, no ticket, no warning. The only benefit to being old. Not being a jerk to the cop helps too.

Being old, pleasant and having all the required paperwork goes a long way. I have not had a performance award in 35 years, put have been pulled 12- 15 times (radar detectors do not help against aircraft or LEOs that know how to employ their equipment properly and are diligent in doing so. I have friend who is a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper. He says not greeting the LEO with, “What the F¥{K do you want?” is also helpful. Evidently that sort of greeting is not uncommon and helps the officer in his decision making process.
