Garmin navigation on 1250rt

I can't seem to get my nav unit to search beyond locally. If I'm looking for a destination a couple hundred miles away, it refuses to find it and route me to it.

What am I doing wrong? It seems like it used to work correctly, and now not, but I'm not sure. It's a very new unit.
 
Are you just using the Search window, or first telling it to search near a different city?

:thumb Default is usually to search locally. To search in a different area, you need to tell that little box to search in a city or zip near where you want to go.

r184, it won't find the city when I try to do that on the unit itself. Also, from the app, how do you get to that setting? I'm trying to search using the bar at the top of the screen. I don't remember it being so limited when I first got it. The problem I was having then was it would take me in circles and have me exit the free way just to re-enter and weird stuff like that. I turned off traffic on it and it seems like now it will almost not find anything I search for. Are those things somehow related?

When I use the app I have not figured out how to search near a different City.
I like the app because I speak to it, then send it to my Nav V.
 
I've not found a way in Smartphone Link/Foursquare to search anywhere except locally.

On my Zumo, I tap the box that says "Searching Near: (my location)". Only after I've selected an alternative search area do I tap the box that says "Enter Search".
