Leaving key in bike when not riding?

I left the key fob with my 2018 RT most of the winter. Cable tied to the handlebar. No one was going to ride it away with the rear wheel off of it and I was working on it from time to time. Still the original battery in the fob today.

If you really wanted to know if the key is communicating with the bike a accurate ammeter would show a current draw.

I pretty much leave the keys in all of my bikes even in the shed which is about as easy to break into as an igloo.:nyah

Handshake

The keys were left in the ignitions of my 07 R12RT and 08 R12R for six months at a time when we lived in AK; no problems noted. I do not think the "handshake" occurs until the key is turned (or in the case of a keyless ignition, until the ignition button is pushed).

My bikes are all older. What is "handshake"?
