Nav V stuck in Year 2000

sleeper

...never too much lefse
I tacked this on to a previous thread on the Navigator V and I think that was not the best approach for getting input from the GPS wizards our there. So, here is a repeat.

After the most recent update, I noticed that my Nav V thinks the date is March 23, 2000 and I cannot find a way to change it. It keeps counting days but it is living in the year 2000. I've tried a soft reset. No luck. I tried a hard reset. No luck except I wiped out all of my BT connections, data, and Apps. I tried a Restore to the oldest backup I could find. No luck. Something is happening when it receives the Sat. data. It will properly reset the time but it cannot get off the date of March 2000.
I have manually reset my R12GS (2015) clock to the proper date without the GPS installed. When I install the GPS and watch the date on the bike, it "updates" to March 2000 when the GPS gets the green bars for sat. reception.
The calendar setting on the bike is not a big deal to me but I would like to get the GPS date right since it thinks sunset is a lot later (it thinks it is springtime) and the Night mode switches on about 90 minutes too late.
Any ideas on how I can remedy a GPS that thinks it is living in the past by about 18 1/2 years would be greatly appreciated.

I’d suggest a call to Garmin Support and request assistance on re-installing the latest update—it sounds like it did not get installed fully or correctly. Lots of vehicles with built-in Nav are having issues due to the November 3rd gps date rollover problem.

Best,
DeVern

Two members on the RS forum are having the same problem.
One called into Garmin and was told Garmin is aware of the problem and working on a fix.

A little "comforting" to find this here. Had same discussion/thread on the FB page of the MOA, too. For now, I went into the bike's computer and had to toggle off the automatic time update from the GPS unit. Then, I had to set the correct date on the bike. Time was good. Waiting for Garmin now.

Dont wait. Contact them.

Don't wait for Garmin. Contact them.
I finally saw the email link on Garmin's support page and sent in a description of the problem this past weekend. Their reply was fast and the message was succinct "Verify your shipping address and we will send you an RMA to exchange the unit". I confirmed my address, got the RMA and shipping instructions within 2 hours. My funky date unit is going back and I expect to receive a replacement unit within a week.

I bet there are a more "broken" units out there not known to their owners. I never use or refer to my bike's date. And I only noticed the problem when the GPS color mode did not switch after sunset. I would suggest anyone with a Nav V go in to the World Clock app on their unit and check out the time displayed there. That is the only place on the Nav V that I could find the date displayed. If the date is correct, count yourself lucky.

I am guessing we will not see any firmware fix to this problem. Their most practical fix is to replace the few units that actually contact them about the problem. I hope that helps you out with how you proceed.

Robert, I have a Nav V from 2013 so I guess I’m past the warranty point. Here’s a picture of the email I got from Garmin this morning - no RMA offered. 51AEFBC9-4817-4252-9BD6-FF9CD5B84DDB.png

I just got off a chat with garmin about this problem with someone named Rick and he indicated they are not going to fix the problem. I bought my unit new in 2017, I have been a loyal garmin customer previously owning 45,75,176,276,376and Montana units this is BS! and BMW should look to a new contractor for their units.

this was my response to that
So a 900 dollar investment in safety and navigation is comprimised after two years this is comepletely unacceptable.

Something is erratic with Garmin

Not sure why my 4 year old Nav V is getting replaced and they won't replace your 2 year old unit.
Erratic/inconsistent:
1. Why aren't ALL of the Nav V units affected by this "rollover" problem, (thank you GTRider) given that this may only happen every 1024 weeks, or 19 years. Aren't all of them fitted with the same hardware and firmware?
2. I got mine in 2015 and they are replacing it. They definitely should be replacing a 2 year old unit!

If you have not tried to contact them via email, go to
https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?contactOverride=true&productID=118565&tab=topics
and click on the Email link at the lower right side of the screen. Good luck and I hope you get it resolved soon.

.

Unless they replace it with a Nav VI I would think the new unit will have the same problem.

Garmin Advice to BMW MOA Members with the Nav V Date Problem

Maybe MOA should advocate for those affected.

Greetings - I was contacted by email this afternoon by a BMW MOA member with the Nav V date issue. I wrote back to him (wjrich100). I then called Garmin Customer Support in my role as BMW MOA Consumer Liaison.

I had a conversation with a product support specialist who was knowledgeable regarding the issue. He said a few important things regarding this. Here they are:

1) The nature of the problem is a "GPS Rollover" which occurred in April 2019. It only manifested itself recently and Garmin is fully aware of the problem.

2) Garmin is working on a software update. Asking when this might be resolved, I was told "We have no idea." He also said Garmin had no idea how many units were affected.

3) He asked that any owner of a BMW/Garmin Nav V affected by a date issue indicating the present year as "2000" to be in contact with Garmin at 913-397-0872. Those with this issue will be added to the "case" as he called it.

I'd suggest that anyone calling have as much information as possible to give to Garmin, including Serial Number, Date purchased, application on which bike, and other useful details which may affect this. I'd say the more they know the better the eventual result may be.

I hope this is helpful. Thank you for your suggestion wjrich100!

I had all this ready when I called but after giving him my email address there was a long pause and he did not need any more info.
I think he was looking up my file from when I registered both units.
He did mention that having to work with BMW may slow things down.

Since it's winter I'm willing to sit back a couple months and wait for a software fix.
As long as the date doesn't trigger a false service reminder it won't be a big problem for me.
If the time was wrong, that would really bug me.

Thank you John for all the help you provide to MOA members.

Thanks John for both your quick response to me and for reaching out to Garmin!
