High RPM vibration

Gregory

Member
Have developed a high RPM engine vibration between 4500 and 6000 rpm on my 99 1100rt. Engine is in tune and have checked the final drive for any movement. It checked out ok. Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Gregory

I noticed a few past threads on vibration in the Similar Threads pane at the bottom of the page.

Don't get bent out of shape chasing stuff.

Start at the basics, a bad plug will do the same thing, even a loose tension wire on the plug.

Your throttle body cable could have stretched a bit.

Bad load of fuel just once in the history of the bike could be plugging the filter in the injector and yes, your injectors have filters.

Start at the tune-up which includes battery cables and grounds, valve adjust, TPS adjust if required and a TB sync. Don't chase the perfect TB sync at idle. It's like trying to make a pig sing, you can do it but really, how often do you spend time listening to a pig sing? You spend more time at the 4K-5K RPM range, concentrate on a TB sync at that RPM.

Plugs, just change them and you don't need the BMW Farfumcheepin Spec'd. The Walmart Auto-lite works just as well at a fraction of the price.

A high speed miss is almost always a secondary ignition issue but if you want to change the HES, get a spreadsheet on the right coding plug and replace parts until your credit card is at the max, carry on.

Bike is tuned. Recently replaced plugs and wires. Valves are adjusted along with the throttle bodies. Battery is 2 yrs old. Around 2k miles on the tires. Checked the final drive for play. No metal bits in the final or trans. Replaced the HES about 20k ago. I have a set of old mercury Carb Stix that do a great job on the throttle bodies. going to recheck them again tho. You are right, Its going to take to take some detective work to figure this out. Thanks for the reply.

Even if you get the air flow perfectly balanced you may still have a partially clogged fuel injector. Pull them and see if there is a detectable difference in the spray. Try Techron in the fuel. Or send/take the injectors for a professional cleaning.
