/7 ignition suggestions

What's wrong with the stock setup? One thing that can be done to a stock system is to add a points booster which cuts down on the wear of the point.

That said, I converted to a Dyna III system back in the mid 1980s. Been working well enough. I did lose one of the backing plates, probably one of the hall-effect sensors and had to go to a replacement. Advantage is that I can adjust the firing point for each cylinder independently...should result in a smoother running engine. It does reuse the stock advance mechanism which might be a weak link. You should also carry with you the points-condenser setup as a spare. DAMHIK.

There are newer systems, some that fire off the crank position. Some allow a simple switch back to the points system. Snowbum has a discussion of these somewhat down this page:

Anton has a summary of some ignition systems here:

My vote is also for the Dyna III. I had one on my Motorsport for years, and help install one on my friends (my old) R90S. I like that you can adjust each cylinder separately, and that you can also get coils for double plugs. I would definitely look at them.

Pointless

I'm seeking suggestions for upgrading to a pointless ignition system for my '78 R100/7.

After 140k miles on my points equipped '74 R90s, I switched over to the Alpha Omega system per Motorrad Elektrik. My advance/points trigger was basically worn out, with constant adjusting of the points gap. http://www.motoelekt.com/ignition.htm

I've had it installed for a few months now and couldn't be happier. One advantage over the DYNA (IMHO), is the Alpha controls the advance electronically. This means you remove the stock mechanical advance mech and install just the Hall effect pickup sensor.

However, if you stay with the points, i DO have an ignition booster (Dynatek) that I'll give you a great deal on.

Points: an early 20th century solution to 21st century problems. BMW gave them up in 1981. Catch up! :)

I went with the optical ignition from Euro MotoElectrics https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/product-p/edl-boigns.htm for my 1978 100/7 with 98k miles on it.

As it runs directly off the crank it eliminates any timing issues from a worn timing chain, gears etc.

It is nice to be able to get both the static and full advance timing in the window for a change.

I did have to grind some of the inside of the front engine cover away for clearance on the trigger unit.

I changed the front cover on my /5 to a latter /6 cover with vent holes and more room. Saved me having to modify my /5 cover and supplies better cooling to the front.
I also kept my Boyer installed and can swap to the Boyer with a 2 wire swap should I want to test my setup.

I left the points and condenser in place and if I want to go back to them all I have to do is put the mechanical advance unit back on and hook up a wire at the coil.

I have no intention of going back to points but everything is in place if a future owner may want to.
