Steering Damper?

What is the purpose of the steering Damper? Maybe the one on F800St is defective, but I feel no resistance when I swing my bars from side to side. Shouldn't there be some level of resistance?

Depending on the leverage you might feel something but it is supposed to damp quick, rapid, movements and slow ones not so much if at all. So whack the bar and see what you think.

Have you had the front wheel off the ground and tried to swing the forks left to right? I would image under normal conditions you won't feel it, but under fast movements of the fork you might.

I have a Yamaha R1 with an adjustable steering damper. I set it so it is very noticeable when I try swing the forks right to left sitting in the shop, but on the road I don't notice it at all.

Yes, that's why I asked the question. I had the front wheel off the ground in the shop. No matter how fast I swung the wheel right and left, I felt no resistance. I had no idea of what it was supposed to do. I thought that I ought to feel some resistance. This is the first bike I have had with a hydraulic damper.
