The only thing "free" is the information you give away. Eventually, businesses will return to something like air-gapped mainframe systems to preserve privacy.

In many ways, our current system is equivalent to everyone being on a telephone "party-line" or allowing the mailman/milkman to walk into your house. Pretty much, no protection of our information in exchange for some convenience/entertainment.
