Since you mention that you also ride a 4 wheeler, how about offering to take the kid to a local 4 wheeler nature area and do some riding together? You'll get to know each other and he'll have much more respect and appreciation for you. Maybe even help him fix the darn thing so it will idle?

That kid is me at that age and given that a lot of kids nowadays spend hours in front of a video game, I appreciate he's outside and enjoying life away from the TV. If an adult had offered to help me with my new interest, I would have been blown away with appreciation.

As a teenager I had a Kawasaki, H1, 500cc, three cylinder, two stroke bike. I put expansion chambers on it and yet some how survived. We lived in a mountain valley near Roanoke, VA. One night, around midnight, I rode home to find my father standing on the front porch. In a businesslike voice he said, “For the last ten minutes I have listened to every upshift, downshift and twist of the throttle you made. Laughing...my riding bud had the 500 and 750 with the bang-bang-bang cans on it.Since he gripped and ripped on every start, I enjoyed the sound and the burnt smell that stuck on my clothes as he rolled ahead of me. My dad was not impressed with that or my '59 Microbus with the modded 1600 engine crammed in it and headers and weak glass pack muffler. He said he could hear either one of us blocks away

I thought of suggesting that Gail offer to go on a ride with the little culprit as well. On my ride, I envisioned a deep swamp, poisonous snakes, gators and a much different outcome.

I love just about all things related to a motorcycle as long as it isn't obnoxious or unnecessarily loud (same thing), but I swear the neighbors kid and his ATV 4-wheeler is driving me crazy. Their house is probably 200 yards adjacent to ours and across the road with a fairly large yard (about a little less than 3 acres). The ATV doesn't run properly & goes dead every time he cuts the throttle. Round and around and around and around their house, across their yard non stop, except when it goes dead, then here he goes again. Also, it isn't super loud, but not quite either. This kid has literally ridden non stop since 3:00 pm this evening, and is still at it now even though it is dark. I am starting to really wish he would hit a tree or something just so it would STOP! They aren't bad neighbors & the kids are really good kids, especially for these days. He is just at that age where they do that, but I don't know how much louder I can stand turning up my TV Does anyone else find that excessive noise bothers you, or am I just too sensitive? Heck, I ride a motorcycle, love motorcycle racing, and ride a 4 wheeler myself.

Here we go with the problems of "Cant put up with their SH.T"!!! The kid down the road with the 4 wheeler. It's a toy and will get old. lol....unless he takes up racing??? The tweeker going by purposely will get busted sooner or later and be gone for good. The yappers will never go away until they are perhaps 15 or so, then they are dead...…….lol.....we put up with their stuff because otherwise WE GO TO JAIL FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

Tried getting a county ordinance against yappers....that worked so now any dog that is outside and carries on for more than 15 minutes gets cited by animal control. So sometimes you can win.

Currently have my state rep with a bill to tax bicyclers on a state road. They like us MUST have a tag. Of course they pay for that tag......Why them? HWY 136 here in front of my place in Ga, becomes crowded with the YUPS that come up out of Atlanta because the road is pretty sparse of traffic and basically a LONG stretch, 8 or 9 miles of downhill straight. They come in packs 3 or 4 or more wide and won't get over or seperate despite law….lol....often they even get law enforcement to escort them in huge packs ………..How do I get to town without Killing them?? Little chance of this passing but I try.....

One thing I have found totally effective is to let my Anatolian pasture guard dogs out on Saturday and Sunday mornings that they have events. I did this one time because I value these dogs to much to let them run loose because of getting hurt; but...….These dogs stand waist high to me at the shoulder and hate bicycles because they chase them down the 1/4 mile fence line for years and never get to get them. HIGHLY FRUSTATED...……..lol.....I stood with 2 of them at the beginning of my driveway at the property line on the road. HERE they came and golly, I just couldn't hold the puppies back...….Needless to say the resulting tangled bicycles with the dogs claiming victory over moving parts brought years of frustration to an end.............YES I JUST DREAM ABOUT DOING THIS......Do I care about the 2 wheelers???....NO....But my puppies, yes.....No telling what infectious URBAN DISEASE they might get.....

I remember a story, it might have been Peter Egan in Cycle Magazine or it could have been a first hand telling on this forum. The short version is that a K bike rider was riding down his street and a neighbor was coming the opposite direction. The rider made eye contact with the driver and the driver turned left in front of the rider and wrecked the bike. The rider asked his neighbor why he had done that after it was apparent that he saw the rider, and the reply was that he didn't like motorcyclists. Setting the dogs loose with the intent to cause harm, then delighting in the harm caused is uncool and I suspect criminal. Both motorcyclists and bicyclists are vulnerable road users whose safety is in no small part dependent on the good will, sanity and law abiding nature of fellow citizens. Your story puts you more in league with the car driver who wrecked the motorcycle, than the motorcyclist

I feel your pain. I live on a private driveway system (Northern Michigan) of properties where one neighbor likes to exit by our house with his snowmobile so other snowmobiles don't follow tracks to his house. Its good for me to have the sledders but not for him. Go figure. He has brought over ten friends by the house on sleds. The other neighbor has a snowmobile and mini-cycle for his son to ride around and around the house. Thank God the kid does not want a helicopter. I was young once also and walked right past those H1s for an H2. When my buddy's Dad gave him the pipes go or you go talk - I got me a set of low cost Wirges pipes - but I did not use them to ride around and around the house. Most evil handling bike I have ever ridden. I have been the old crazy guy with both neighbors. I use the phrase "I did not buy property to be on the side of a trail head". i can use that line with confidence because I take care of a 12 mile ORV trail each summer that has a trail head. I suggest to them on a regular basis that they go take their riding to the appropriate trail. I also suggested one of the newer electric minis are a good neighbor option. At first I had a sense of remorse over speaking up - but in retrospect I am good with it. If you plan on having a conversation with the neighbor you have the advantage of thinking thru it in advance and the potential outcomes (I know you sound shy over the forum. It sounds (sic) that a possible approach would be to invite them over to your house to see how loud the quad is when you are trying to listen to TV.

Reminds me of an old friend from Ft. Worth. He lived next door to a church that used loud speakers when they sang hymns. He liked to sleep in on Sunday mornings. He also owned an air boat with a 500 ci. engine with straight pipes. After a considerable amount of "diplomacy" he decided to do a tune-up every Sunday morning. Ended up with much quieter mornings. Go figure.

Oh yea, it must be an old person thing! For 35+ years I've lived in a neighborhood where it’s been fairly quiet or at least tolerable. In the last 5 years or so, as the neighbors get older and many succumb to age, their houses are sold to a generation of people younger than my age group. For instance, the neighbor across the street isn’t very young but likes his music to vibrate the windows. Majority of times it's only when he's coming home or leaving. Then there’s the neighbor on the next street over that thinks everyone should enjoy Rap music along with them when washing the car! Fortunately it's very sporadic. Oh, and don't forget the ones at the end of the street that think there is a set of Christmas tree lights from a drag strip at the beginning of my 25 MPH posted road! I’m so tempted to accidently roll a metal trash can out in the middle of the road timed perfectly with the finish line! But it would be my luck they’d hit me trying to avoid the trash can! As others have mentioned, I was young once, loved to speed, loud music, cars and motorcycles, been there, done that! Hopefully in a couple more years, I’ll be headed down south and out of NJ to a more open, cheaper and non-socialist state with friendly people of high values, if there’s any left by then!
