Engine block rot?

Is it possible for there to be engine block rot? There’s a spot on the engine (clutch side) above the Id plate and below the frame joint where i found a layer of crud. When I tried to clean it, it felt soft and as I poked at it, it started to feel real soft. Is it possible that the engine block has a bit of rot? I assume not, but maybe a hole that was filled?

I can't quite see the details. But the only thing black I can think of is either dirt that has gotten oiled up or possibly you're looking at the pushrod tube seals? Black "rot" doesn't come to my mind.

OK, can see it a bit better. Does it scrape off? Can you look at bits of it under a magnifying glass? Seems like it's just embedded road debris that has gotten more dirty and oily over time.

Yup, will scrape it off and examine it. Hoping there isn't a hole or a crack there that was filled.

_Highly_ unlikely in that area. I'm with Kurt here; try a good cleanup and see what's there.

These engine cases are fairly thick and while surface corrosion on alumimun starts 5 seconds after it's machined it does not rot through. And if it does, in over 30 years of owning and working on them I have never seen it.
