Options info for ordering 2019 R1250RT at dealer

Thanks, but the red one is in the showroom already. I want a topcase and prefer it painted to match. I actually bought a new helmet (Schuberth C4) in Resonance Red in anticipation of purchasing the Mars Red, until Laura viewed Sparkling Storm. LOL. We shall see.

You could have the "nose" painted Mars red to match to primary color of the bike. You could have it done when you have the top case lid painted. Then it would be a beautiful and special RT.

Hello,

I hope I posted in the correct thread.

I will be ordering the new RT at a dealer next week. I am not interested in what color and option pckage the dealer wants; I want a bike for me.

My wife has been speaking over the phone to one of the sales weasels and she briefed him on my wants/don't-wants. Specifically, she mentioned that I did not want keyless start. He replied with "they all come like that now," which got me thinking about all the other items that I do not want.

Does anybody know if it is possible to go in and order a bike to be made with everything that I want and not what the dealer wants?

I do not want keyless start.
I do not want shift assist pro.
I just want the radio option.
Definitely want a certain color with painted topcase, possibly the Option 719 seat, too.

Basically, I would love a little insider info so I will not be told "that cannot be done." I understand it is called a package and I do not need anything Premium.

Does anyone have a little insight?

Cheers,
William

Maybe its time for you to find another dealer who will get you the bike you want. I have owned two special order RTs : a 14RT was a basic bike with no options at all , my current bike an 18RT has the standard package @ $600 extra which is wired for the GPS in the dash, cruse control and one extra power outlet. I don't need all the extra fancy options either, the only thing is if you get a bare bones bike when it comes time to trade it in you won't get as much out of it because the dealer may have a hard time selling it.

I suspect the "I don't want to pay for that stuff" special order path actually makes the bike more expensive in the long run.

First, a buyer probably can negotiate a bigger discount purchasing in-stock bike than on a special order bike.
Second, at trade-in or resale time the bigger discount goes to the SO bike.

Percentagewise and dollarwise depreciation makes the SO bike an expensive alternative. I can understand not wanting to ride around with unused radio or keyless ride or quick shifting capability, but maybe the OP should just buy what's on the dealer's floor anyway.

You can order a top case from BMW already painted to match to color you choose. I bought a Mars Red top case for my 2018. If you get the fully optioned case, sit down, they are not cheap!

As for the rest of the options, good luck. I see the one option package that includes the radio includes all the other stuff you don't want. I am not aware if you can nit pick options.

Thanks for the feedback. I have yet to go in person, but there are 3 dealers in the metro Atlanta area, with one in Chattanooga; I do have some choices. I am not going in there with a stubborn attitude. From all of the replies, I can feel confident in my selection. Who knows? Laura may really like the red one and we can buy from their stock.

I will keep in mind the potential for trade in after 3 years.
Great point! I guess I will be buying one that the dealer wants to sell, eventually. HA

William:

You might want to find out who the BMW specialists are on the dealers' sales staffs, and then deal with them. You could get some names from your local MOA club. My local mega dealer has at least two guys who really know BMW's.

The guy who misinformed your wife was probably a generalist.

Thanks. Sometimes I think women get treated a little different in these type of situations. Nothing bad, just a little different.
While getting a service done, my wife and I strolled in the showroom. We checked out a 2018 RT and I enquired about the wires protruding. He basically built the clock to tell me the time. At first, I failed to recognize the charging hook-ups. It did not dawn on me at the time, hence the enquiry. As soon as he started explaining, I knew what they were, but he went on and on. Lol.

After we left, I got the feeling that I knew more about the RT than he did. I ride a C, but have been drooling over the RT for years, so I have a little knowledge. I asked him a few questions, but he did not rattle them off and and struggled to give me some general info. It felt awkward to me. Generalist, indeed.

Thanks again.

Here's the option/package combinations
538 NEW Cruise Control $350

I never thought I would use cruise control on a moto... until I bought one. After using it for just a few days riding my newly purchased 2017 RT from St. Louis to Colorado, I will never own a bike without cruise control. I guess my point is that a lot of the stuff available on modern motos might seem superfluous if you have never had it before. And then you try it, and find that it really helps.

So, to the OP, my suggestion with regard to your preferred configuration: don't let it be a show stopper.

If you decide on Mars red and a special order, see if the factory will paint the "nose" Mars red for you.

I just now got around to REALLY noticing the difference in the non-painted -vs- painted nose piece. Yikes! How tacky for those black plastic parts to be SO visible like that. Never paid all that much attention before. Thank you for pointing that out. Talk about sore thumb. HA

Question: who painted the nose parts on your bikes and how much should I expect to pay? They do look good.

Wifey and I will be visiting one of the local dealers this Saturday to order the 1250 RT in Mars Red Metallic. They had one in stock, but recently sold it. The other color that piqued Laura's interest was the Option 719 Sparkling Storm Metallic, but now likes the Red better because I told her about the extra $1,800 for the Sparkling Storm paint. HA

And for those members that are following and/or or contributing advice about the options to select (or not) on my purchase, I have decided to get the bike as they come to the dealers with the Select Package. Definitely with a 49 L topcase, painted to match, but that option was not on the Build Your Own web site. I guess they need to update that link.

Again, thanks for the posts to guide me.

Cheers!

Good choice to go with the Select Package! Your bike with come fully equipped!

One item you'll appreciate is the Central Locking feature.

And, you can order the 49L Top Case in Mars Red, factory-painted. The factory-painted Top Cases are only available in the "fully electrified" verision. That means it'll plug into the the outlet under the seat, which will allow it to work with your Central Locking.

And, you can install the BMW LED Top Case brake light as the Top Case comes pre-wired (it's just plug and play).

The part number for the Mars Red Factory Painted 49L Top Case is 77438565872.

Now I know it's $300 more than the non-eletrified version, but by the time you paint the plain white aluminum Top Case, the price difference shrinks. And, you still won't have the eletric version that plugs into the bike.

I really like the optional LED Top Case brake light, too! It's mounted into the Top Case and is easier to drivers to see. It's priced at $284 (part number 77518520044).

What the heck, you only live once, so go for the whole enchilada!

Will do. Thanks for the encouragement!

My new 2019 R1250RT (select package)

Well, I picked up the new RT yesterday. I really love it. Still have a lot of technology to sort through, but will take my time learning and enjoying.

Some of the few additions will include the auxillary brake light for the top case, Illium crash bars (rear ones will fit, but they are currently doing R&D for the ones that protect the engine,) and a new cover if the one for my C will not fit; I cover it while it is parked at work and it is garaged at the house. Other than that, she is loaded enough for me and the wife.

Does anyone know off-hand if a Covermax, size Large will fit over the RT with top case and panniers? I will find out tomorrow any, but thanks in advance anyway.

I will be getting the nose trim painted to match when i put it in for the 600 mile check. The dealer has a painter lined up for the task.

Congratulations. I've been lusting for an RT for 20 years and when one popped up at my local dealer this Winter I jumped too. Same Mars Red Metallic and same options. Except the dealer had ordered the bike with the one change I wanted to make anyway: replacing the shorter sport windscreen that comes on the Mars Red with the stock height. More protection comes in handy here in New England.

I'm jealous that you can ride in GA. My bike has been in the garage since one abnormally warm day 3 weeks ago and still has only 19 miles on it. Even if we have warm days, I'm not exposing the new bike to road salt just yet. I"m anxiously waiting for Spring. Enjoy the new ride.

Thanks. I was not aware of the different size screen heights for one model or another. The color option (from the Build Your Own website) stated Style: sport, for the color Mars Red, which would make sense about the shorter, sportier windscreen. I am only 5'8" and the screen raised all the way up was sufficient for me; no wind, buffetting, etc. Interesting.

As for GA weather, I hear ya. Not to build up too much salt for the wound, I do ride year round, even in the rain. Threats of icy conditions warrant a commute in the cage, though. I will ride tomorrow, but the powers to be (computer models) have forecast a wintry mix for Tuesday. We shall see. I still have to be alert for water sources (broken sprinklers, water mains, etc) that have added an ice layer to a normally dry road. That is the only downside, so far.

For now, I will refrain from posting too much about riding for all my Northern brethren that cannot ride right now. I would not like it if I were in that situation. I grew up in MA, so I enjoyed the winter, but as an adult.....yeah, I am over the snow; I have to drive now, so it is a different perspective from being a kid with a sled. HA

Used to commute frequently in most weather too. I've worked from home for the last 4+ years, so my morning and evening commutes are 15' down the hallway. And cold I can take. Frigid is something else. High temps last Monday were 5° F. I rode the bike home at 35°... but 5 is out of my range.

Good news, I can report that the seat heaters and grip heaters work wonderfully.

In 1984 when I lived in NYC I hopped on my bike (1984 Honda 450 Nighthawk) when the temp was 6F just to see what it was like. Bundled up with every warm bit of clothing I owned. Ski pants, fingerless gloves, long johns, ski mask, the whole works. Rode it two blocks and turn around. Nope. Not for me. My limit these days is above freezing for commuting and no long distance riding on days when the high is predicted to stay below about 50F. Yeah. I'm a wimp compared to some of you guys but I'm ok with that. :p

Has anyone done this install? I have the brake light and want to put it on and want to know how to remove the flat back plastic piece that is recessed in the assembly. Not sure to cut, drill, or pry. Attached is a pic of the part in question. It looks like 3 plastic rivets hold it in the assembly.
Any advice?

I got it sorted. Those center pins of the rivets get pushed down to break the plate free. The plastic rivet heads then fall off to remove the piece. Once done, it was as simple as plug and play, as they say.

Thanks!
