1978 R100/7 replacement key

When I bought the bike, the previous owner gave me two keys. One key broke off in the ignition and I was able to get it out. The remaining key works fine but I need a spare. I bought blanks from my local dealer but two separate locksmiths attempted to cut copies from the spare key but they would not work the ignition. Neither locksmith had blanks that would work. The key that broke has the number on it so it is probably original. I went online but couldn't find a solution to my problem. Any suggestions?

I had a problem with a locksmiths not being able to cut BMW motorcycle folding keys as well as the straight keys. They are not brass is what I was told.

It took me a lot of calling around to different locksmiths but I finally found a locksmith who specialized in car keys. He cut four folding style keys and four straight keys no problem.

It did cost a bit more but was well worth it. St.

Hmmm...I don't have a spare...never really thought about getting one. Let us know how you make out.

Go to a real Locksmith not a hardware store!

I myself have two each of the folding BMW keys for my 78 RS and my 84 RT.

Because I have lost keys on trips, I also carry a flat key for each bike on my house key ring.

The only reason I don't carry luggage keys on my house key ring is because there is no room for the Hepco Becker Keys on the ring. LOL

Anyone can cut a brass key. I once had a hand operated key cutter that would do them. To do a steel key takes a bit more knowlege and better equipment than some locksmiths have. St.

OEM BMW keys are stainless steel. Make sure you tell the locksmith they are stainless before he puts it in the cutting chuck! They can get quite upset when it ruins their expensive cutting wheels. I did go to one locksmith who would not touch stainless keys for this reason but at least he sent me to his competitor who had the right type of cutting wheel.

I've had the same issue with the blanks being able to work in the ignition of my 78 R80/7. It seems the blanks I've gotten from Motobins that are supposed to work (folding and non folding) are not exactly the same and doesn't allow for the proper depths. I've tried this 3 times with different guys with no luck.

My local locksmiths I've tried had no problem attempting to cut the steel keys. I may just pop the ignition and see if they can make one from scratch.

Just get the correct Taylor blank from your locksmith and get the keys cut.

I might have spare, but never take key out of ignition. The only person that might take the bike would be another airhead and he most likely would fix something on bike before he returned it.

I had the same issue with folding key for a 1981 R100cs, the folding keys are a different length and don't work on all bikes, hardly visible difference until you measure them.
I ordered a plain non folding key and it worked fine.
