new to me 1999 R1100S exhaust question

It has an aftermarket pipe on it
After the head pipes as it goes up there is a fatter section before it splits to the two mufflers
    Brand?
    What is the fat piece?
Its not very loud but looks nice

    Steve -

Could you take some pictures and post them? Might help people see what you're seeing.

Hi Steve and welcome to the Forum.
Your 1100S is a bit different from the other oilheads in that it is more 1150 in some ways. But the exhaust systems on oilheads ALL have Catalytic Convertors.

Your two header pipes feed into the Cat and then one pipe goes up the muffler. One of two original "mufflers" is not a muffler and there mostly for show and to have two cool pipes sticking out the back. But you will notice only one gets sooty. I am not sure if the second half is just an empty chamber or contains some baffling but no exhaust comes out of it; it all comes out one pipe. If you still have it, take good care of that thing. The replacement cost for a _replica_ is over two grand.

My 2004 R1100S has a stock catalytic converter / exhaust system. Both tail pipes function, but the right one definitely seems to have more exhaust coming out.

The stock 11S is two in to one into one in to two kinda

Must not been paying attention to other S's as I have not seen that setup before with a can by the rear strut.

Our 99 has two pipes all the way to the equally working hot mufflers...Staintune system
You roll it on hard and at some point you get a warm saddle!

    pipes

I get full exhaust out of both and it says titanium on the muffler on the rear
No cat at the bottom like the stock system just the fat part as it goes up

I believe that is a pre-muffler or resonator and not a CAT. I've seen it before, but it's been years and I don't remember the brand.

Nope. Every oilhead has a CAT on it. Why would the S be any different?

Several companies sell a R1100S CAT Eliminator. Why would they do that if there was no CAT to eliminate?

It's been called a resonator, pre muffler and a bunch of other things but inside you will find a CAT device and some BMWs have several CAT devices in them.

I'm guessing that 51797 was referring to the image in post #3 which looks like something but I sure as heck don't know what it is. It certainly isn't stock. Resonator? Catalyser? Twin homogifier? High speed muffler bearings?

I replaced the cat on my 1100S with a Y-pipe from Danmoto which did not have this extra part to it - just a straight pipe up to the dual mufflers.

    It looks like this.....http://www.dan-moto.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=173
