Balls
They look like the balls used in a ballmill to crush coal into a powder.
They pulverized coal is then burned as it drifts in the air in a boiler.

Somewhere it said they were tumbler balls for crushing as mentioned. Look like shotputs!

They are typically used in ball mills, varying sizes steel balls in a rotating drum with select product, used to pulverize into materials into fine powders. Encounter them at a local cement processing plant, every now and again as you went through the ball mill area one would get chucked out of the mill, bloody frightful to see them bouncing around.
