TX Llano River flooding OCT16 2018

Major flooding on Llano river this morning after 10-12'' of rain in last 48 hours. A favorite bridge across Lake LBJ on FM 2900 collapsed around 8 this morning and local Austin station was on scene.

The Hwy 16 bridge in downtown Llano has water running as high under in it than I recall and Kingsland where this bridge went out is downstream. The Llano meets the Colorado here, so all this headed toward Lake Travis toward Austin. Gate operations on most of the Highland Lakes Chain by the LCRA.

The upper stretch of LLano off IH-10 in Junction flooded about a week before catching a lot of unsuspecting campers as well as locals with the flash flood. River crested 10' less at Llano that time. So,the ground was pretty wet when this rain train happened between Kerrville and Mason counties yesterday, the 15th.

We have crossed the 2900 bridge on many rides to this area to miss Marble Falls traffic, now will be the new norm for some time

Watching all the things going over the Starcke Dam downstream of Lake Marble Falls has been crazy.
They claim gates are open, but its overtopping currently. Boats, boat dock with boats, jet skis, kayaks and several small buildings and a lot of creek debris roll over and into a huge rolling whirlpool on it's way into Lake Travis which is at 100% full as of 6PM.
All this water will fill up the flood pool and start flooding some low structures on Travis. H does not miss owning a lakeside bar there when this happens now.

The Llano River is going to have a second crest tonight!

Trying to place this crossing? Typical of area west of Llano and river flow normal times

Starcke Dam between Marble Falls and Lake Travis where a lot of property went over the edge. This has been like this all day and waiting second crest tonight. The drop to the river is normally around 80' and the bluffs on right side 100', the videos show it hitting top of bluff!

Today Lake Travis is catching all the water and moved into major flood stage. Considered full at 681', currently 695' and still rising as on top of Lllano river flow they have opened gates on the larger Lake Buchanan on the Colorado to relieve it as well. The second anticipated crest at Llano did not happen.

Lake Travis is large, 18,390 acres of surface area,1,130,000 acre -ft of volume and 270 miles of shoreline, it is filling at a fast rate anyway.

Llano receding, Lake Travis and Buchanan now in trouble

The two larger resevoirs are at major flood stage . The watershed above Lake Buchanan on the Colorado is still pumping water into the system after more rain today and they are managing it by releasing downstream towards the last flood resevoir, Lake Travis. If they open the gates like the story below mentions, it will flood the two constant levels below, Lake Austin and Lady Bird lake ( former Town Lake) in downtown Austin

A friend who works for the marina where she had her place sent a pic this morning and it was already flooding. This is Lakeway,TX Evening news has the lake at 700', working on a record.

Hoping picture isn't sideways, the sailboat docks are about 20' lower than the shed that is in the water typically with a parking lot in front of them. The places current name is Sundance Grill located at Yacht Harbor for those who may know the area.
When with power company, the '91 flood had the big building in the shot under water totally and we launched a patrol boat from the street to kill some lines near the water. Here it goes again.

Some crazy numbers from the river authority:

Lake Travis has had 218 Billion gallons enter it since the 16th

20 billion gallons released so far

Mansfield with 4 gates open currently putting out 11 million gallons a minute(seems a lot ,may be hour) and planning on more gates still as the forecast now has another system headed in from Pacific in a few days

Shortly after the 2900 bridge collapse, this was seen downstream. A truly scary sight. As heavy as that span would be, I would have thought it would lay flat on riverbed. The power of water flow is amazing

someone actually went over the Starcke Dam and lived

Saw this quick story, but no follow up yet. Story was he was trying to re-start his boat to move it from flooded Lake Marble Falls and did not succeed.

    speaking of SRV

He's ready for the expected rise in downtown ATX . And , yes, that is Austin skyline now if you remember the old days.

H's old place in it's current configuration. Same place as my post#8
Lake still rising this morning and it may get to main roof surface by Saturday. The current owners built the kitchen and walk-in coolers on skids to move ahead of floods, so they are on high ground or floating.

In 1991s Christmas flood, the main ridgerow was only thing visible. That was before she owned it in 2002.She dealt with two minor floods when she was the proprietor.

The street light pole to the left in shot has a blue line just below light I painted at highest level in '91 out of a jon-boat.
Here was the place after the water receded in '91
