TX Llano River flooding OCT16 2018

Major flooding on Llano river this morning after 10-12'' of rain in last 48 hours. A favorite bridge across Lake LBJ on FM 2900 collapsed around 8 this morning and local Austin station was on scene.

The Hwy 16 bridge in downtown Llano has water running as high under in it than I recall and Kingsland where this bridge went out is downstream. The Llano meets the Colorado here, so all this headed toward Lake Travis toward Austin. Gate operations on most of the Highland Lakes Chain by the LCRA.

The upper stretch of LLano off IH-10 in Junction flooded about a week before catching a lot of unsuspecting campers as well as locals with the flash flood. River crested 10' less at Llano that time. So,the ground was pretty wet when this rain train happened between Kerrville and Mason counties yesterday, the 15th.

We have crossed the 2900 bridge on many rides to this area to miss Marble Falls traffic, now will be the new norm for some time

The last time they fast tracked one was after the Blanco River/Wimberley Flood. The Fischer Store bridge was built on a 24/7 schedule and was back in service amazingly fast. The one outside of town was a conventional 5 day a week , but amazingly went up as quick and looking at it a better design...but that's my perspective.

I never really grasped how important this bridge was until I tried to go that way last week and had an hour reroute. Was such an automatic route, I forgot about it until I was committed to that route and had a moment.

    bridge update and a ride

Took a ride out in direction on Kingsland to check out a new ride and eat location Saturday. It sits next to bridge and opened right before the collapse. The film crew who caught the moment of failure were on their deck. This place, Boat Town Burgers, will be a nice stop once all the mess is cleared and the bridge is open...the food is great, a bit pricey ,but not having the bridge is hurting business along with winter season.

My usual route is the bridge, so had to go thru Llano after riding the Willow City Loop meeting the cow and suffer riding Inks Lake Park Road 4 Forgot about the big fire out there prior to the flood as well, different views of the pink granite hillsides with little vegetation. My picture didn't come out of the fire damage.

The crews are non stop and there are already three sets of pilings with bridge support in place on the Kingsland side.Long way to go. They said they were going to build from both sides, but the only thing I see on the south shore are two huge culverts laying on the ground currently. I got a stink eye trying to get close to the work zone...I'll bring a hardhat and yellow vest next time
They have the lake lowered as well for debris clean up, quite a mess in every direction.

Then this was at fuel stop in Johnson City...an unusual sight. A McLaren Spider...the sound was F1 as he caught up with me and throttled up. I was more than happy to have that bright rabbit ahead of me in a heavily known patrolled area on US281...he wasn't on the side of road before I turned off...lucky fella.

    Sounds good

Maybe a bridge by then, the bluebonnets may have a great showing as there is a lot of green along Willow City Loop already

Found this info on the bridge. https://www.dailytrib.com/2018/11/30...-home-or-work/

There's a link for a live feed camera. I was able to open it and watch the first try, but now it won't open for me.

Edit: The live camera seems to be working this morning.

It doesn't get better than having a McLaren as your scout....

I somehow missed this thread last October; thanks for posting. We had our big one in 2013; the greatest natural catastrophe in Canadian history.

Watching all the things going over the Starcke Dam downstream of Lake Marble Falls has been crazy.
They claim gates are open, but its overtopping currently. Boats, boat dock with boats, jet skis, kayaks and several small buildings and a lot of creek debris roll over and into a huge rolling whirlpool on it's way into Lake Travis which is at 100% full as of 6PM.
All this water will fill up the flood pool and start flooding some low structures on Travis. H does not miss owning a lakeside bar there when this happens now.

The Llano River is going to have a second crest tonight!

Trying to place this crossing? Typical of area west of Llano and river flow normal times

    IMG_2711.JPG

Starcke Dam between Marble Falls and Lake Travis where a lot of property went over the edge. This has been like this all day and waiting second crest tonight. The drop to the river is normally around 80' and the bluffs on right side 100', the videos show it hitting top of bluff!

Today Lake Travis is catching all the water and moved into major flood stage. Considered full at 681', currently 695' and still rising as on top of Lllano river flow they have opened gates on the larger Lake Buchanan on the Colorado to relieve it as well. The second anticipated crest at Llano did not happen.

Lake Travis is large, 18,390 acres of surface area,1,130,000 acre -ft of volume and 270 miles of shoreline, it is filling at a fast rate anyway.

There was a fifteen second update on CBSAustin a few minutes ago, said they are placing first beams in a few days and plan on April completion. Digging into granite has to be slow!
I guess they will beam and deck as they go for worker and material access. Lot of back and forth on barges when I was watching from the burger bar. The original plan was still to meet in the middle, but not happening yet.

My I-cant fix rotated photo phone shot of the beam supports
