2003 k1200gt - how does the center fork cap come off?

On my 2003 K1200GT, there is an aluminum cap on the center of the fork. Not wanting to scratch it up, but do you pry a small screwdriver or knife blade on the side? Not much of a lip. Thanks for the tips. John

John,

Lots of "how does it come off/go on" questions can be sorted out at www.realoem.com.

Put in the last 7 of your vin and then browse the parts fiche.

Helps to find parts and interchangeability as well.

realoem.com is a great resource, but the fiche just shows the cap as a disc - no details. The fiche Max BMW often includes actual photographs and sometimes installation instructions, but has no additional information on this part.

I'd assume the cap is a press fit and try to pry it out with a tool softer than aluminum. I have a plastic (nylon?) putty knife that is good for avoiding scratches, and can be shaped or sharpened to create a good edge. Maybe a disposable plastic knife would work?

K1200GT (2003-2005) and all K1200RS are similar: The cap is only pressed and glued on top of triple clamp.

Unless you are planning to repair and replace the top ball-joint there is no value in removing this cap. Nothing can be attached there as there is no room under this cap - all space is filled with thread of the upper ball-joint assy.

Cap removal - tip thanks

Great picture of the assembly. On my GT a prior owner scratch the cap. I thought I would replace it. Another idea was to use a RAM mount attachment that inserts a stick down that hole. Well, from the picture provided, the RAM mount is not possible. You saved me from a purchase. I will just get a RAM surface mount to stick over the cap. Problem solved. Thanks.

Also thank you for the reference to the fiche images. I will take a look. Regards to all of you. John

Thanks. Good images on may parts. ZK00059 was my 7 digits for the k1200gt 2003. I gather, my bike is the 59 made in 2003. It is a sweet ride. I just want to keep it clean. $6 t0 fix the scratched up cap that stares at me. regards John

On my 03 K1200RS I used a Ram Mount on the reservoir cover.
