1974 - 1984 BMW airhead cylinder lock sets

An earlier thread led me out to my shop and to a box of ignition keys, lock sets and related spares. I have a functional ignition switch with a cut key from a 78 airhead and I had assumed the key was for that cylinder. I have since discovered that any Taylor b69k or Neiman airhead key - cut OR uncut - work perfectly. How does that happen? A lock smith could set one up like that? Has anyone else ever run across this situation other than /2 and /5 ignition components of course.
