    Removing shift linkage

About to remove the transmission on my 1979 R65. The original boot is still on the shifter linkage. I don't want to tear it by trying to get to the linkage clips. Is there any reason I can't remove the foot peg and where it connects to the transmission as one unit?

    Thanks,
    Jim
