    Great news for sure

    My only question is where did all that dirt/rubble get relocated to?

    It's mostly still there I think. They rebuilt the road over it. The new road is now 250' west of where it was. I believe 250' west of the original road used to be salty wet stuff.

    Supposedly, the road opened this morning, two days ahead of last weeks planned Friday opening.

    Thanks Lee, will have to check out the new road in the near future I would think a different view crossing thru for sure! Detoured the last opportunity.

    Kinda weird as the ocean typically wins on reclaiming land, this time the hillside won

    Open with construction delays...

    Wanda and I rode up CA 1 from Morro Bay to Monterey this past September 2018 on our way to the Andretti Winery in Napa.

    There were two delays due to construction. The biggest was the mountain they are still moving where the geological event occurred.

    Even so, the delays were short and traffic going north on a Wednesday was light. Lots of places where there appears to be new pavement.

    Coming into Monterey on the other hand, traffic going south was backed up for miles due to some construction near Carmel.

    They built the new road on top of the mud slide.

    FYI: If you're planning a ride up Hwy 1, from north of San Simeon, on to Monterrey, be advised that due to new cracks in the road, Cal Trans now closes the highway if heavy rain is forecast;
    ... gates on either side of Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide are locked and unmanned. Once those gates close, no one — not even emergency services or Caltrans employees — will be let through until authorities inspect the area and perform any necessary cleanup.

    Just rode down Hwy 1 from Watsonville, CA to Carpenteria, CA last Saturday. Hit the bridge at the Carmel river at around 0830. Eating oatmeal at the beach in Cambria at 1000. Only had to squirt past three groups otherwise had the road to myself 95% of the time. Overcast and dry. What a road!

    Hope your ride went well and the weather was nice. I realized the road was so clean and nice because the Tour of California bicycle race was going south on 1 a few days after I rode.

    We used to ride the coast hiway several times a week, from Monterey to Big Sur, for the year (1972) I was stationed at the Presideo of Monterey. On weekends we would ride to San Luis Obispo. Once we went for a night ride to Big Sur and it was foggy -- thick fog. But at one point along the ride we were able to get above the fog along the ocean and the full (or near full) moon was out -- one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. We pulled over and just marveled at what we were seeing. Looked like a soft fluffy ocean, almost up to where we were standing, with the moon shining on the top of the fog bank. Utterly spectacular. We were soaked from the fog.

    On an early morning ride South from Big Sur, the fog ran up and over the road but he road area was clear. Like riding through a tunnel . Stopped in San Simeon for breakfast of abalone omelets! Love that road!
