    R1200RS Fender Extender/Protection

Looking to prevent some of the road muck from blasting the front of the engine as well as protecting the rear of the bike and haven't had much luck. Lots of stuff for GS and RT but not for an RS. For the front about the only thing I see is a cover for the front of the engine which I don't really like, has anyone successfully added a fender extender to an RS? Same with the rear area, what was BMW thinking leaving the entire rear area open without a fender? Never mind I know why they did......style over function.

Can't say for your bike specifically, but for one past bike, I got a used front fender (trailing/rear section), cut it down so I had just the final rear 5 or 6 inches, and attached that to the end of my stock fender (two little self-tapping screws w/ the points outward, then trimmed, plus epoxy where they overlapped). It flapped around a little more than the stock setup, but not a big deal.
On a couple of bikes, I've gotten suitable "mud flap" material (available at some Harley shops, Cycle Gear, etc.), cut that down to shape, and extended the fender's trailing section and/or made a shield for the rear shock.
I've also made a couple of sleeves (booties) from marine-quality seat vinyl to slip over shocks to protect the seals from dirt.
I forget the name offhand, but on all three of my oilheads, I've installed a black fiberglass "inner fender" which mounts to the brake hardware - works great and you can't see it unless you know it's there.

The RS fender is not rigid enough for most fender extenders and riders were having rubbing problems when adding a fender extender.
Some people reinforced the inside of the fender before adding a fender extender.

Pyramid Plastics has a extender that helps to stiffen the fender but it's not very pretty.

Several companies make huggers for the rear. Here's one.

A popular option is a Mud Sling by Machineartmoto. This mounts in front of the rear tire and protects the shock.
They also make the front engine cover you mentioned.

On our bikes I added the mud sling and a BMW rear fender that's only sold in the UK and Australia.

    Here's the rear fender.

I added to the new rear fender so it extends down to the reflector.

Part number in case it's available in the US now.

    Good idea.

Lee so you bought a rear fender from the UK then added to it? That seems like a good plan. Did you do anything to the front?
I just checked my dealer and that part number is no longer available (at least here).

Kansas city tried to order the part from Germany but the system would not allow the order.
A member from the old RS forum bought the fenders from his local dealer and mailed them to us. Fenders and shipping was very reasonable.
The install is easy and can be done without removing the bag mounts.
The old RS forum has disappeared and I only communicated with him by PM so I don't have a email for him.
If I'm able to find him on the new RS forum would you like me to contact him and see if he can still buy and ship a fender?

I have not seen anything I like for the front. After 26,000 miles we have very little sand or rock chips on the front engine cover, so I may not do anything.

PM me if you want me to try and contact the guy who purchased the fenders for us.
