I see where I'm supposed to change rear bevel gear oil every 12,000 miles but I don't see in the booklet what weight oil to use?

SAF-XO lube is what BMW had been recommending for final drives. Data sheet on that lube is at http://www.ge39.com/files/SAF_XO_SAF_XJ_B1174_96.pdf

BUT... that is now being reported as NLA on several dealer websites ( http://parts.bmwmotorcycles.com/p/BMW__/Synthetic-gear-oil-SAF-XO/46940488/07512293972.html shows the typical message received) so your best bet may be to check with your dealer to see if this is a temporary product outage or if BMW has chosen to start recommending a different product.

Best,
DG

SAF-XO is just a Castrol brand name used for their oil. No need to use it, but no problem if you do.

What you need to use is a quality API GL-5 spec synthetic 75w-90 Gear Oil, that is all you need and that is all SAF-XO is.

So Motul, Ligui-Moly, Amsoil, Redline, Mobil, etc., all are fine.

For instance, if BMW were using Shell gear oil rather than Castrol, they'd be spec'ing Shell Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90 (which is a very good gear oil) and everyone saying you need to use Spirax, when as mentioned, what you need is a quality, API GL-5 spec, synthetic, 75w-90 gear oil.
