Needing battery

What battery do you recommend on a 2013 r1200rt. Been looking at a odyssey brand but don't know anything about them? But I do like the two year warranty on them. Any help would be welcome.

I've had an Odyssey in my 2010 RT for almost three years and it's been fine. I don't use a Battery Tender except a couple times during long term storage in the winter and during the summer the bike may sit for over a month at a time, it will always start fine. They hold a storage charge very well.

I've used them in other bikes over the years with good results, one lasting over six years and still working. I just replaced it because I thought it was time.

This has come up quite a bit recently - both here and on Facebook. It seems the top recommendations are either an Odyssey or a Motobatt as they are both sealed, maintenance-free batteries.

A friend of mine put 175,000+ miles on a ‘08 R1200RT using UB12220 batteries.
They cost about $40 each. He replaced them every two years, or so.
Something for your consideration.

Well, I have a couple of the Universal 12220 batteries and a couple Odyssey batteries - depending entirely on my whim at time of purchase. We also have a couple Ever-Start batteries from Walmart bought while on the road. My opinion: Odyssey makes better batteries that may be worth the cost - or maybe not depending on bike usage.

Paul,
What useful life did you get from the UB’s?
My RT will come due for a battery fairly soon.

One is over three years - still good. The other is at 2 or so years, still fine. These bikes sit some, on smart chargers. For the price I like them.

I've had a Panasonic battery (LC-X1220P) for 8 riding seasons / 60,000 miles and its still going strong. Cost me all of 90 bucks.

I've been using this battery for the past 4 years with no issues

It's made for electric chairs and costed me something like $75 CDN including shipping

I only had to raise it a bit with a piece of rubber (1/4 in)

YMMV

getting to choose batteries

Last battery I bought was the first stop on a trip to the Hill Country for Vintage rally. Bought the first one I could find at Auto Zone that fit perfectly. Had about 4 years on it when the bike was totaled in the flood and still doing the job. Have a Panasonic in my Airhead, It has been good.

I have been using Westco batteries from Beemerboneyard without a problem. Current one is going on four years. I think you get a discount being a MOA member as well.

2012 RT, 72K miles

Odyssey PC680 battery is now 4.5 years old and just fine. Every BMW brand battery I have ever had crapped out exactly on schedule, 36 months. At least they were predictable. I never use any kind of battery tender.

I have always had the sort of jobs where my motorcycling might get sidelined for a month or more at a time. After getting that one perfect day to go riding and finding out the the battery was stone dead, I started treating my bikes as it they were electric vehicles. When they get parked, they get plugged in. Living on a decent charger makes batteries last a long time.

Batteries Replacement

I just replaced both of the batteries in my 2002 and 2006 R1150 GS Adventures with the Odyssey PC680. The batteries I removed were installed in March 2011 so got 7 years out of them. One tested fine when removed last week and the other would start the bike but tested at 65% health. I had the gas tanks off the bikes so just replaced both of them knowing eventually the one would fail even though it tested fine. In the case of both those batteries (as I also do with all other bike batteries) I charged them for 12 hrs every month regardless if I rode the bikes or during the 5 months they sit over the winter in a heated garage. I just put it on my calendar so remember.

I used a Centech 3300 battery charger going through the BMW accessory plug on these bikes.

I buy all my batteries from www.batterymart.com. Free shipping usually with 3 day delivery. The Odyssey PC680 is selling for $109.95. Every battery I have bought from them over the years has always had a fresh manufacture date so they must have good turnover of inventory.
