Calling On Rally Attendees With First Aid Qualifications!

Ii is important at our rallies to have individuals available who are able to render medical help if necessary. Unlike most volunteers, these people do have specialized skills that only they can offer. Some of these volunteers have recent passed First Aid courses, some are EMTs,, nurses and even on occasion, doctors.

First Aid Chair Lisa Malachowsky lisabmwmoa@gmail.com would like to hear from these members that are able to become part of very important team of volunteers. After reading the information below, please send Lisa an email with title MOA First Aid Volunteer in your header.

What we DO at First Aid

- We wash scrapes, scratches, and blisters and bandage them.
- We share sunblock and sunburn gel (if there is no blistering)
- We immobilize injuries for comfort and to prevent further injury
- We log each person seeking care: Name, Complaint (5 words of less) and Home town
- We offer detailed directions to local E.R., Urgent Care and Pharmacy
- We monitor the radio for calls for assistance on the “Medical” channel
- We sometimes need to talk on other channels (dial on top) Remember to switch back!
- We roam the rally site in a golf cart when we have enough volunteers with jump bag and radio
- We familiarize ourselves with the venue when roaming, learn as you cruise around.
- When roaming in golf carts we offer rides. Keep the seats filled.
- We, Chair/Co-Chair, arrange transport to local E.R. for those who need a ride and are not 9-1-1 material
- We, Chair/Co-Chair track and support any hospitalized members (as able)
- We provide a cool place in First Aid for people to shelter from the heat.
- We provide water for those needing hydration.
- We provide 24 hour accessible cool storage for storage of personal medications like insulin.
- We provide a place to lie down for those that feel they need it. Talk to these people. They may have a medical problem. In the past we have had some very sick persons that “just want to lie down” in First Aid when they really need to be in and Emergency Room ASAP.
- We are available 24 hours, off hours covered by Chair or Co-Chairs)

What we DON’T do at First Aid

- We do not give any medications, not even Tylenol or Motrin. (Thank the lawyers)
- We do not give medical advice. For those with professional licenses, you will need to rein in your instinct to practice as you do at your day job. This is just First Aid Folks.
- We don’t do skilled care treatments for people with pre-existing conditions.
- We don’t respond outside the venue, this is the turf of local E.M.S.
- We don’t force anyone to go to the hospital. People have the right to make bad decisions. But, if you are very concerned about someone declining to seek medical care, you should:
1: Get a Chair/Co-Chair involved

2. If they just want to walk away ask them to sign your log after you write the words “Declined to go to hospital” Ask once. If they refuse, let them walk. Don’t write any narrative of the event.

3: Do log their contact info so we can try to follow up.

Thank you in advance for volunteering your invaluable help.

Paul

New rally first aid chair:

I have been asked to take over as Rally First Aid Chair, and I agreed to do so. Thanks Paul, for all your help recruiting volunteers. I'll be arriving on site sometime on Wednesday, July 12, and camping on site. I plan to be at the First Aid Station Thursday morning by 8 am to start setting up. We will staff the First Aid Station from 9 am to 9 pm with 4 hour shifts, and hopefully 4 people per shift. I hear that the First Aid facilities are very nice, with cots for patients, if needed.

If you are interested in volunteering in First Aid you can email me, or just come by the First Aid Station as soon as you can and sign up for a shift or two.
