My heresy: scrap the annual national rally

The final straw for me was Des Moines as a rally site. I thought it was a well-played joke. Iowa and motorcycle nirvana is an oxymoron.

So instead of an annual rally, scrap it and hold regional rallies instead. The various BMOWA regions can select a permanent rally site for their regional rally or chose to rotate within their regions. The advantage is regional rallies would need less space as they'd be lower attended and thus more venues would become viable.

Then in order to keep the sense of belonging to a national group, have the national rally every third, fourth, or fifth year.

Des Moines. July. Heat. Humidity. Flat. Uh, no thanks. Although I will admit you have the finest vegetables and beef you've ever had. Seriously, Iowa food is amazing as I found out on a cross-country ride and the people are very nice.

So while technically the areas in the links are within Iowa, they are located near the far eastern border. So you might as well be in MI and WI and both areas are 3-4 hours from Des Moines.

However, the effort to put some lipstick on this pig is appreciated.

Glad you appreciate the effort and that now you see the beauty! I have crisscrossed Iowa at least 4 times and have enjoyed each trip. Of course I enjoy eastern Kansas in the Flint hills and Highway 61 in Nebraska as well. And the ride getting there is really half the fun. Once I get to the Rally I spend most of my time AT the Rally site. Coming from NC I have lots of cool options along the way as do folks coming from OR.

Some people like to travel interesting roads on the way to the rally or on the way home.

If you like to try local micro beers the Iowa Taproom is a good place to visit.
They have 120 Iowa beers on tap. A friend and I stopped to check it out on a bicycle ride this weekend.
It's 3 miles west on the fairground, near the Court Ave area.

Peace Tree is brewed in Knoxville and they recently opened a store a block south of the Tap room.

Lipstick's getting pretty thick here. Good food and drink is available almost anywhere, good roads not so much...

and the pig is looking better every day

Good food, good drink, nice people, 1,000's of BMW motorcycles, interesting places to see and great roads getting there!

It is not about the destination but the journey!

And I live 2 hours from some of the arguably best MC roads in the country!

Smitty's on Army Post Rd near the airport is the best place to get pork tenderloin sandwich.

How about as a 2018 Rally slogan: Yes the roads suck, but the food and people are fantastic!

I agree, lots of lipstick. And, yes, there are interesting roads on the way, so why not just bypass the rally and continue to ride them.
