Two Germans riding the USA

What follows is a ride report from May 2016.

Back then, my brother came from Germany for 6 weeks for the purpose of doing a cross country tour on my two trusty R1150GS. I bought the 2nd one just for this trip. Originally I posted the travel report on a German travel site, and now after almost a year I will transfer the report bit by bit to the BMW MOA site :wave
The report will be heavy on pictures, with a few words sprinkled in-between. Oh, and it will be bi-lingual too, English :usa AND German :german

Enjoy
Hellebauer aka Helmut

May-9th-2016

Yesterday was the start of what will hopefully turn out to be a great trip. 5 weeks on bikes around the USA. I have been living here for 20 some years, and my brother just flew in from Germany to join me for this adventure.

After a leasurly late lunch at the local watering hole I picked up "young man" at the Washington DC airport. With my car. Some people here go like:" What? You have a car?", since they always see me on my scoot.

Now, speaking of starting the adventure...... here is a little culprit: The starter of one of the bikes just went up..... so we have to deal with this first.

<img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7537/26302745544_92aefa6454_z.jpg

Next day ....

Shortly after 7am we went to have an oldfashioned American breakfast at a Korean place, where the food turned out decent.

After that, being well fed, I took the starter apart and found that the brush spring had failed.

Long story short: Could not get a $1 spring fast enough and ended up buying a new starter locally. I will rebuild the old starter once we are back. After trying seats and windshields for my brothers bike we took the two bikes for a first spin.

During a short break it was decided to name the bikes after Heckle and Jeckle. It might have to do with the beaks I guess. GS purists might have prefered ducks over magpies?
:laugh

<img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7395/26923068955_bb32e9310a_m.jpg" alt="Bild"

May 11th .... or so

Today was farming day.
First there was the ant farm in my ceiling fan. :ha

Yes, I have ants in my ceiling fan. To show my appreciation, I gave them some borax sugar mix, and then some more before we leave.I would hate to see all their friends move in while we are gone.

After having a delicious Maryland crabcake for lunch we visited a good friend on an organic farm.

Then there was some paperwork which begged for attention, and finally we started packing some bags. Tomorrow we'll be on the road

Thursday May 12
Finally the day of departure has come. We got up early and finished some work around the house, and on the house, cleaning up from last nights thunderstorms

The weather forecast was grim and we expected a wet ride.
Die Wettervorhersage war recht bescheiden.

Nevertheless we lucked out completely and only got a few sprinkles on our way south through the Apalachian mountains. Good riding was had on mostly dry back roads and even the sun showed up ! In Warm Springs (VA) we found a decent motel 5 minutes before a thunderstorm hit the area.

May 13th
More spirited back road riding was had on some twisty roads, hitting southwest, and we ended up in Sevierville NC.

The view from the back balcony of the motel was very nice

May 14th

Things look not so hot in the early morning. My brother feels like he is getting sick. Not good. On the plus side, there was a fair amount of water fowl to be watched from our balcony.

We stopped at a pharmacy in Gattlinburg VA and got him some meds. After putting the meds in my brother we filled up the bikes and there we met Cliff. Cliff is riding a small 2-stroke Minsk which he bought in Vietnam. His next plan is to do the Road of Bones in Siberia.

http://www.cliffdanger.com/lucy/

My brother's bike was also sick, spitting oil from the left valve cover gaskets. So he put his rain over-boot on .....
Also musste der Ueberziehstiefel her ....

Finally we made it into the Smokey Mountains. Because my bro didn't feel so hip, we decided to take the fastest and most direct route thru, to reach our days destination, Atlanta.

Atlanta is not a prime destination for motorcyclists, unless you have a good friend there. Vern !
Vern !

Vern had already gotten us some gaskets for the leaking valve covers and we put them in while drinking some beers.
Vern hatte uns bereits neue Ventildeckeldichtungen besorgt, welche biertrinkenderweise installiert wurden.

Next was some Mexican food.
Anschliessend gingen wir zum Mexikaner essen.

We finished the evening after some more friends stopping by, another beer or two, and motorcycling tales.

**** May 15th

Time to hit out further out West ! But first we had an excellent and cheap breakfast at a place Vern took us to.

Two hours West of Atlanta is the Barber Racetrack and Motorcycle museum, where we stopped and spent a few hours.
Wow! Das it ja cool!
Wow! That is cool! Too bad the "young gentleman" (as it were) was somewhat sick. And the moped. And the starter, too. Yeah, well, when it's easy, there's no fun.

May 16th

From Meridian we hit south on 59S and 11S towards New Orleans. Instead of diving into New Orleans, which I had already seen, I tried I tried the "Old Spanish Trail", a northern bypass, which turned out to be a dud. Pretty but too short.

From Meridian fuhren wir auf der 59S und der 11S Richtung New Orleans. May 20th

We had excellent breakfast burritos and coffee next door to our Inn for $9 for both !

On we went to Moto Sage (in El Paso), where I had arranged for a tire change a few days ahead. This was the third time this happened. I did not have my passport along, but the boarder guys were all friendly and after short or no checks we were on our way again

From 25N we took 152W to Emory Pass and then Silver City, where copper mining is the main trade.

On Emroy Pass overview we met Adrian, a motorcycling skateboarder. The room was not too bad though. The Whitewater Motel would have been the better choice on hindsight.

Since we arrived in Glenwood after 7pm no food was available, so I had a few beers at the local tavern and chated with the locals.

The local attraction was a catwalk in a canyon, which has been closed for a few years. As a result a few businesses had closed down and little tourism is left.

https://www.google.com/search?q=glenwood+catwalk&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X

More pictures can be seen at https://www.flickr.com/cameraroll

http://www.germany66.org/cms66/index.php/die-route-66/highlights-der-route-66

.... here some quick translation

The myth of Rt66....

In German television docus, a trip along Rt66 is compressed and tastefully presented in 45-60 minutes.
These various RT66 docus are then broadcasted at least once a month.
And after such repeated brainwashing per TV, by now every year hordes of middle-aged German bikers venture to ride the mother of all roads, and of course on a Harley.

The myth of Rt66 has become religion and our Teutonic hardcore Rt66 fans will not be bothered by reason or anything and want to ride the legend from end to end. And so those poor saps spend 2-3 weeks riding from Chicago to CA, seeking what's left of Rt66..........

What the docus omit to show to our German riders is the boredom along the Rt66. Once on route, the riders realize that RT66 no longer exists in long sections, and Interstates will be ridden instead :scratch. And other remaining sections of old Rt66 are so bumpy, that any Harley feels like a hard-tail.:boldpurpl

Nevertheless, one can certainly have fun along certain sections of Rt66.

Fly to LA or Las Vegas, and ride the rental bike along certain parts of the Rt66, which is done in 2-3 days. These sections also include Seligman and Kingman, which are considered the heart of Rt66.
The remaining 2.5 weeks of vacation can be spent on much more beautiful stretches in California, New Mexico or Arizona to visit diverse marvelous nature parks.
However, in such route planning, including sightseeing, the distances and the heat are often underestimated. 300-400 miles a day is enough.

I have also met Germans with rental bikes in the Smokey Mountains, although the landscapes in the East of the US are very reminiscent of Schwarzwald and Allgäu. Therefore: If you spend a small fortune to ride the US, then do it in the West. The western part of the USA offers grandiose landscapes which can not be seen in Europe.

Angel is a living legend for promoting and reviving historic Rt66. Judging by the hordes of Europeans we met there, he did a fine job !
Leider war Angel krank.
