Unfortunately the Illium bar is a 1" diameter, and the readily available flag pole attachments are for 1/2". Maybe a marine parts place would have something that would work the same way.

Are you saying you can only attach to something with a 1/2" dia?

No. I looked at the brackets at J&P. They only accommodate 1/2" tubing like you see on a rear luggage rack. I really liked the Illium idea. I was considering adding those to my bike, so it would have been an elegant solution. When I get out of the hospital I will check out some marine supply places. They might have clamps that will work.

A quick look at "adjustable marine flag mounts" (search) will yield some good result.

It's a common mount also used on buildings. The marine version is usually stainless. A couple of U-Bolts and you would most likely good to go.

    I see what you mean.
What size flag do you plan to fly?

    OK

A crash bar, a tube, and some hose clamps and you are golden. Please, son't over think this. Just make it work.

I have not gotten that far. First task was to find a way to attach a flag pole without doing any damage to the bike. Flag size comes next, although it will not be that big. The escorts can easily have speeds above 40MPH, and that is a huge load with a larger flag. The "kits" I have seen online have fairly small flags, which is OK for me.

I have seen that item when I entered the HD universe via J&P Motorcycles. They had several items, including the one you highlighted. The problem is that the Illium rear guard is 1" diameter, and they only have 1/2".

What I am thinking might work best is a piece of wood shaped to fit in the holes in the rear rack. That would have a hole to hold the base. Then I will need to create braces to hold the upper portion because of the wind loading.

Could you use U clamps to attach a 1/2" pipe under your rear rack, then attach the J&P flag holder to the pipe?

That is possible. I found a mount at West Marine that might work nicely with a piece of wood shaped to fit the openings in the rear rack. Of course some techno wizard could probably 3D print that

Plenty of options in the marine world.

If you're looking at West Marine there are a few that should work:
